He seems to have abandoned the formation that made him successful. Luiz and Cahill is a bottom half pairing as well.

You mean 3-man defense? I don't think he has a players for it in Chelsea, either for outwide CBs or for wingbacks.Kimbo wrote:Murray wrote:Conte in big danger of being the first manager to get fired this season.

Dropping permanently Fabregas and going 4-4-2 could work though, he also has a lot of experience playing it at Juventus, at once he used this system with very lighweight duo of Pirlo and Marchisio in central midfield. For Chelsea I guess Matic and Kante would have to play, but Oscar also has a decent workrate, so maybe he could do the job in more attacking situations as CM... or Fabregas.

He had all summer to get the players, but now he's left with old man Terry, midtable standard Cahill, that Brazilian fraud, and Ivanovic who is basically Vinnie Jones at this stage. I've assumed he's not playing the 3 man defence because it's never worked here, but this was reason I found him interesting, he's a disappointment to me so far.

True, but apparently they weren't ready to pay crazy money for someone like Koulibaly from Napoli or other players weren't available.Kimbo wrote:stinger wrote:You mean 3-man defense? Not sure though what's the point of getting average players like Alonso or overpaid "stars" like Luiz.
Conte is excellent coach, but clearly will need much more time (and money) to re-shape Chelsea. Of course probably won't get it... time, money probably won't be a big issue (but recently it seems there is a limit at Stamford Bridge).
