Wenger fears for African careers that Arsenal will bottle it

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says the timing of the African Cup of Nations means the continent's players will find it difficult to join major teams.



Wenger expects to lose at least two men for around four weeks over January and February for the 2008 event in Ghana.

"(Organizers) know more players play in Europe for the big clubs, who don't want to pay the price," Wenger said.

"That means it will be detrimental to the African players as the big clubs will not give them a chance any more."

The absence of Ivory Coast players Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Eboue could be a severe blow for the Gunners as the current Premier League leaders seek their first title since 2004.

"You don't want to lose a championship because the players have to go in that period," Wenger said.

"Usually the players come back very tired and you lose them not just for that period but much longer."

The 2008 African Cup runs from 20 January to 10 February, instead of the current biennial format at the start of the year, Wenger called for the tournament to be held every four years in June.

Actually he's right. Being tied up every other year because of the Africa Cup negatively influences players prospects.

Sounds like a fairly simple deduction to me...

If this carries on no one will sign the likes of Adebayor, Essien, Mikel, Drogba, Muntari, Benjani.

No one will sign players that will improve your team massively and help you win major honours if they are only available for 100 of every 104 weeks.

Van Gaal mentioned the Africa Cup as a reason for not signing African players too.

February is when prices are won. You can't have key-players missing in that period without being affected.

Doesn't mean African players will not be signed, because their are plenty of good ones, but the ANC will always negatively influence the value of these players.

Are you saying that players not being available will not have an effect on a managers decision whetehr they sign a player or not?

Hleb - if they are available for 96% of the fixtures and they are good then there will be no impact.

It would only dissuade people from signing really $h!t African players which will be a good thing.

If Arsenal, Chelsea etc don't sign them - Spurs, Man City, WHU, Villa, Everton, Newcastle and Pompey will happily sign them knowing they will be available for 96.15% of the fixtures.

Arsenal and the like would be caught up if they allowed this to happen so they will carry on signing them.

So if Wenger doesn't like it - don't fucking sign them.

BS Wenger is also standing up for his (& other) players. There are others like Van gaal who also do NOT sign these players, believe me it would be great for African talents to be nurtured by Van Gaal, they could be turned into new Kluiverts. because of the ANC they miss that chance.

I've seen African players loose their spot in the starting 11 of their teams; the ANC is NOT helping African players carreers.

Its not hindering the best ones and it gives some of the others a chance to be noticed.

They're only away for 4 weeks every 2 years. Some are even picked up by big clubs because of their achievements at the ACN.

This is bull. world class players will always be bought no matter what. he is trying to put pressure on organisers. this happens every time the ANC comes along. Also its kind of weird for him to say that because he has bought african players himself and the ANC has been played every 2 years now for a long time hasnt it? it hasnt stopped him and it will prob only prevent bad players from making it.

We will be losing Manucho Gonclaves , oh curse the tournament.

Why is it held in Jan then? If theres no reason to not hold it in June, then Wenger is right.

I don't think its factually correct to suggest that top quality african players won't get a chance at joining top clubs, because if they are good enough there will be an interest.

However the fact they may not be available for selection for a number of weeks will prove to be a real consideration for management, and if they can find an equal alternative who is European for example, this player would be more appealing simply due to the consistancy they might be able to offer the team by simply 'being there'

The World Cup's in June for the same reason that the Olympics are in the summer. It makes no sense from the athlete's point of view in either case, but we continue out of tradition as it's just about bearable.

The ACoN however is a totally different proposition, only a few countries are able to host at the standard temperatures you'd expect at the world cup. The rest would be even hotter to the stage they wouldn't host the tournaments the majority of the time. South Africa is one of the countries which are able to host the World Cup from the climate perspective.

The other country who maybe able to conduct the world cup is Eygpt SA and Eygpt are at 2 distant corners of Africa get the picture.
