coincides nicely with many articles in the media condemning it, does it happen more than often or is it just the media highlighting it that has forced referees to take action?

There's got to be consistancy, what about Boupa Diop's tackle on Mascherano the other day, that was only a yellow and he actually did get the man, today Gunarsson missed the man and got a red (though I can see why he has got the red)
