My hope is for Atletico-Bayern and Chelsea-Real Madrid.
Atletico can have Courtois, Madrid doesn't have to go to Germany.

As per the QF, having the 2nd leg at home is a huge advantage
Surely UEFA are not telling Atletico they can breach the contract agreement they so willingly signed last summer? Do they have no shame?

or an all Madrid final on Iberian Peninsular.
Anyway, such agreements like with loan players shouldn't exist in the first place imo. Especially for international loans.

Premier League has adopted a rule where you simply can't play against parent club if you're out on loan. which solves the ambiguity.
if they did that Europe-wide though, there should be a limit to how many players you can loan out. gets ridiculous with the player-hogging clubs like Chelsea and Man City do.

Just like Jaime I was also hoping for Atletico-Bayern and Chelsea-Real clashes. Simeone against another tiki taka team and Mourinho against Real would be a lot of fun.
In theory Courtois can play now, but I still expect him to not. Atletico won't risk their good relationship with Chelsea, I would expect that having a chance to loan him for next year(s) will be more important than playing him in Champions League semi finals.

That's why I said I don't like it for international ties. It might be ok in England, but forcing other teams in a CL semi final to not field players is super arkward.
That's from UEFA:

sure, that makes sense, but there's also the potential for corruption when one team is playing a player owned by the other team. imagine Courtois makes a crucial mistake that decides the tie - even if it's genuine, that's going to look dodgy as hell. let's face it, if you were going to fix a tie like this, having the opposition GK on your staff would be a damn good way of going about it!

Re: 2013/14 Champions League Semi Finals
I didn't know Uefa could just do that. Surely if this wasn't legal Chelsea wouldn't even have bothered?
It is annoying that we might miss out a quality player in the semi or even a final but this should be made clear from the start otherwise Chelsea should be allowed to prevent their players from meeting them. Also as debaser has said it can lead to some awkward situations.

IMO Chelsea should pay Atletico not to play him in the region of 100 million euros.
Chelsea are playing these legs with them coming to Anfield in the league in between so hopefully they will focus more on the trophy Mourinho desperately wants at Chelsea.

With strikers like Torres and Ba, Atletico will probably just fine with Aranzubia any way.

I told a good friend of mine who is a Bayern fan, that Chelsea will beat them at some point in the champions league. I think they will meet in the final and Chelsea will win.

Were you in a coma for 2 years between the CL semi-final, Copa del Rey final, or the 2012 title-decider?

There was nothing to stop him from playing in the ties anyway, just that Atletico had to pay an extra £5m, which they said they cannot afford. If they are struggling to afford £5m for a CL semi-final tie, they must be in big trouble.
Kind of makes the whole idea about signing loan contracts pointless, when UEFA can just do what they want. I wonder if they would have reacted the same if it had been a European team facing Barca...
Hopefully he won't make anything like the impact of Morientes in the Monaco-Madrid tie

£5m is a fuck of a lot to pay to get a player for 2 matches! yes, it's CL and if he played key role in getting them to the final you could say it's worth it, but it's not exactly pocket change.

Re: 2013/14 Champions League Semi Finals
Now I understand why Chelsea have loaned about 79 of their players out. It's all part of a long term plan to one day come up against some of them in the CL so they can't play. Genius.

Godawful draw, this way Atletico and Real, whom I hope reach the final, are in a clear disadvantage.

Re: 2013/14 Champions League Semi Finals
For such an important game they should be able to raise a little money through the fans, players, sponsors and the club itself. The difference in revenue they make if they get to the final will make it more than worth it. They might not make it to a cl final again for a very very long time so they should do all they can considering how important Courtois is for them.debaser wrote:S4P wrote:If they are struggling to afford £5m for a CL semi-final tie, they must be in big trouble.

Whatever you think of it, it's the terms Atletico agreed to when they took him on loan for a 3rd season. Now they are about to face us in the CL (something I imagine they realistically didn't expect) they complain about it and appeal to UEFA to help breach the contract they signed. I would understand them being more pissed off (even though I wouldn't have any sympathy) if the terms were that he couldn't play, as per the PL rules.

Surely both clubs would have consider the validity of such a clause at the time of entering into the loan agreement? You can't blame UEFA for trying to maintain the integrity of the competition.
Besides even with UEFA's approval, there is still a chance that Altetico will not play him in an attempt to keep him on loan for next season.
