Where does this leave the Senna Deal?
    Can we sign them both?
What would Diarra bring to the table?
Is it a smokescreen by Diarras representatives or Lyon?

Skysports.com understand that Manchester United have emerged as favourites to sign long-time target Mahamadou Diarra from Lyon.

Real Madrid have been in pole position to snare the Mali international for some time but it is believed that United have rejoined the chase for his signature and their bold move could be decisive.

Although Diarra has spoken of his desire to play for Real, it is believed that he would not turn down the chance to head for Old Trafford if the two clubs can agree on a fee.

Lyon have stressed their determination to keep Diarra, who has been a key figure in their side since arriving from Vitesse Arnhem, but they have already bagged midfielders Kim Kallstrom and Jeremy Toulalan this summer.

Furthermore, Paris Saint Germain's Modeste M'Bami is also being considered as a reinforcement for the Ligue 1 champions.

There is the belief that a deal can be agreed before the transfer deadline at the end of August as Sir Alex Ferguson looks for a long-term replacement for Roy Keane. Villarreal's Marcos Senna remains another midfielder on the Carling Cup holders' hit-list but it is understood that Diarra has been the top target all summer.

Real will also push hard for the 25-year-old's services if l'OL do agree to listen to offers but United are thought to be ready to fend off the strong rival interest.

Sounds promising, but also like they're trying to force Real into a deal. They're basically saying they won't hesitate to sell to another club if they offer more.

Is that really the kind of attitude the Utd fans want from Keane's successor, by the by?

I don't like him and i don't like his attitude.

Senna brings more to the table Diarra has a good passing range but likes to sit behind play and has limited ability on the ball

We already have Carrick to sit infront of the defence and spray the ball around.

The only advantage Diarra has is that he is more powerful then Senna but 20 million or 4 million, i don't think there is a question

I think the reason why Fergie is after Senna though is like Parky said before, Fergie believesin the youngsters coming through i.e. Darren Gibson Richie Jones David Jones and Fletch

Can't see it happening myself. 14 million on Carrick, I can't see you offering more than 18 for Diarra, which is too much anyway and Lyon would turn it down I think. Even with 16 coming in this summer (Van Nistelrooy and Obi Mikel), I can't see another massive signings happening. Senna's a good option if Fergie's got faith in the youngsters. Diarra is no better than Muntari in my opinion.

We never tried to sign Duff.

Robben and Essien we did and I'd love to have Essien. Robben I;m not to sure about, very good player but he's inconsistent and we already have Ronaldo for that.

Well it could be who offers more. It was quoted at £18 - 20 million earlier in the summer, although a figure today said £14 million. confused

I think anything around £18 million might be enough.

How old is Diarra? Its a lot of money considering you spent £14m on Carrick but you would have a great CM and one that would only improve over the next few years. Every successful team needs a strong spine and with Carrick and diarra, Vidic, Rio and Rooney and ?? you would have one that has room to grow.

I'd rather have Hargreaves or Senna.

Diarra seems like a mercenry based on his comments and wants to play for Madrid.

I'm not so sure how well he's fit in with Carrick either.

I've actually watched quite a lot of Diarra in the French league. He is a very physical commanding figure however he loves to sit deep infront of the defence and has quite a good range of pass on him. I think the plan was to play someone infront of Carrick to break up the attacks an 'enforcer' It's not Diarra's natural game. Essien would have been far better in this department.

Waste of money - can get as good a player elsewhere for less. Lyon don't want to sell and don't have to sell, he seems to want to go to Madrid, Muntari is a better all-round midfielder and is more passionate about Man U as a club. It would be a silly move if Fergie makes it.

hargreaves would bring the most to United. He's perfectly suited to the premiership. I can imagine him having a point to prove in every game. He's quick he's good in the air, he's strong, he's two footed, he can play on the wing, he can get foward. I don't think you could say that about any of the other candidates
