    Soccertainment!

The highlights really do tell the story, it wouldn't suprise me if we had 80% possesion. Our finishing was woeful, albeit we created about 20 half chances. It should have been 4-0 at half time, I was sure Charlton would snatch an equilizer.

well at least 25% must have been no one in possesion them, because the only times Charlton had the ball was when they were taking the goal kick resulting from one of our missed chances Wink

I still don't understand why Bouazza's goal stood, it was obviously a foul on Given. I wouldn't have been happy if it cost us points.

I've seen the goal almost twice and I can't say I saw much wrong with it, a scorcher - no defence in the world could have coped with it.

Really good goal, although I haven't seen it on tv. We didn't clear a ball on the edge of our box and he volleyed it on the bounce from the edge of the box into the far corner. Another very well taken goal. Adebayor's goal was also a good team goal from our game today.

There wasn't a thing wrong with it, other than the pathetic keeping from Given.

He cocked up a punch at one of the corners aswell. Maybe it was just that Newcastle were poor at set pieces and Watford are good at them Rolling Eyes

I saw that this morning... Clare "should be in the kitchen" Tomlinson and John Solako Doh

"Steven Gerrard totally dominated, didn't he?"
"Well that's what you get when he plays in the centre".

Xabi Alonso, I swear, must be the most underappreciated midfielder in the big 4. He just can't get credit when he's in the same team as Gerrard Laugh

Charlton really are shocking though. Worse team I've seen in the premiership.

    Ratings from this morning's NOTW:

    Alonso 7
    Gerrard 9

Fair reflection obi? I didn't watch the game (only saw the highlights, which are nothing to go by really), but I assume it's more like the other way round.

Gerrard took his goal well, but the Charlton defence seemed happy to give him 5 yards of space to initially mess up, and then shoot. Rolling Eyes

    <Ale>

If only Xabi got as much praise as Cesc does. Laughing
Also, i dont think Charlton would have created nearly as many chances against you if Gerrard wasnt in the middle. With gerrard and Xabi in the middle, any big teams will slice you apart.
Good attacking play though although i think Gerrard may be even more immune from criticism form sky sports commentators than Rooney.

    That would be spot on.

Agreed. I thought the finish was excellent but the 'goal' - ie everything leading up to it - was very poor. Gerrard's first touch was pretty terrible given the circumstances but Charlton were absolutely shocking. I can't put into words how poor they were.

    Kev,

I agree with you that against the top teams he and Xabi won't work on their own but I don't think any of Charlton's chances were due to the balance in the centre yesterday. More down to the shocking play from our fullbacks.

not necessarily, the pressure Gerrard puts on an opposing teams back 4 vs the burdon that Sissoko takes off our defense is a tight one to call. With pacier centre backs a Gerard/Alonso combination would work fine, but with Carra and Hyppia as our 'big game' defenders, we will miss Sissoko.
