Friendlies wrap: Ashton sinks former team

Dean Ashton scored against his former club as West Ham beat Norwich 2-1 at Carrow Road on a busy evening of pre-season friendlies on Tuesday.

American defender Jonathan Spector rifled home for the Hammers after good work by Luis Boa Morte and Bobby Zamora before the highly-rated striker, who missed most of last season due to injury made it 2-0 before the break.

Ashton latched onto a loose ball after Boa Morte's shot was saved and fired past Andy Marshall.

Former Sunderland striker Chris Brown pulled a goal back for the Canaries in the second half.

Elsewhere a devastating 10-minute spell saw Birmingham beat Peterborough 3-0 at London Road.

A goalless first half saw both sides enjoy decent chances without reward

Five minutes after the break former France midfielder Olivier Kapo broke the deadlock with a left-footed shot past Mark Tyler.

Posh nearly hit back five minutes later before Cameron Jerome headed Blues into a 2-0 lead.

Sebastian Larsson rounded off the win after 56 minutes, collecting Garry O'Connor's pass before driving home.

Lomana LuaLua scored a hat-trick as Portsmouth continued their impressive pre-season form with a 4-1 win at Bournemouth.

Fresh from their Asia Trophy triumph in Hong Kong, Harry Redknapp's side eased to victory with all five goals coming in the second half.

Niko Kranjcar's deflected shot put Pompey in front after 49 minutes and LuaLua grabbed his first 14 minutes later.

LuaLua made it 3-0 after 77 minutes and quickly completed his hat-trick before the home side scored a consolation when Brett Pitman was fouled in the area and got up to score from the spot.

First-half goals from Jay McEveley and Craig Fagan ensured Derby were the first to claim the Brian Clough Trophy after defeating local rivals Nottingham Forest 2-0 at Pride Park.

The Premier League new boys demonstrated the gulf in class between them and their League One opponents in the inaugural match played in memory of the manager who brought so much success to the two sides.

New Rams signings Robert Earnshaw and Andy Todd were both given their home debuts, while rookie Forest goalkeeper Dale Roberts was given a chance to stake his claim as Colin Calderwood gave Paul Smith a rest.

But only seven minutes had passed when the 20-year-old was picking the ball out of the net after Stephen Pearson drove towards the Forest goal before finding McEveley, who drilled a 25-yard effort low into the corner.

Billy Davies' side doubled their advantage eight minutes later when McEveley turned provider, floating a ball over the top which Fagan raced onto and coolly slotted home from inside the area.

Forest's day soured further 10 minutes later when Kris Commons was forced off with a knock to be replaced by young German winger Felix Bastians.

Grant Holt could have halved the deficit for the Reds soon after but he sliced Brendan Moloney's cross over the bar.

But it was the Rams who looked the more likely to add to their lead with Earnshaw first finding Pearson and later skipper Matt Oakley, but neither were able to apply the finish in front of a crowd of 25,159.

In other pre-season action Craig Beattie broke his duck for West Brom in a 3-3 draw at Bristol Rovers.

Rickie Lambert's brace put Rovers 2-0 up before Nathan Ellington, Beattie and Darren Carter turned the game within 10 second-half minutes.

But Lambert levelled matters and completed his hat-trick with 17 minutes remaining.

Recent Wolves recruit Freddy Eastwood helped seal a comfortable 3-0 victory at Northampton.

The former Southend striker struck two minutes from time after first-half goals from Darren Ward (22) and Andy Keogh (31).

Sheffield United were held to a goalless draw by south Yorkshire neighbours Rotherham.

Crystal Palace drew 1-1 against Belgian side Anderlecht.

The Champions League side opened the scoring before Ben Watson brought the Eagles level.

Coventry remain unbeaten in pre-season having drawn 1-1 with La Liga outfit Espanyol.

Marc Torrejon's 28th-minute header put the visitors from Barcelona ahead only for Jay Tabb to equalise before the half was out.

Mario Licka scored the solitary goal as Southampton beat Millwall 1-0.

Matty Fryatt and Darren Kenton scored as Leicester beat Cheltenham 2-0 behind closed doors.

Gillingham beat Championship visitors Colchester 4-2 at the Priestfield.

Sheffield Wednesday lost 2-0 at Oldham as Craig Davies and Michael Ricketts scored the goals.

Bristol City beat local rivals Swindon 1-0.

Wasn't impressed in the slightest by last nights game. Norwich were very poor, our defence in particular, if it wasn't for David Marshall, Hammers could have had 5 at HT. That is pretty much the first team we can expect for next season other than Brellier and Smith in the middle replacing Fotheringham and Russel....I'm worried. Hammers were not too much better though, they did f@ck all second half.

    Ashton is a Judas c**t.

But a good player at that.
