Re: FAO COTR & Luis
Ill use this as a nutwang type thread to keep you updated on torres' progress frankie
Spanish journalist Guillem Balague reflects on a brilliant Anfield debut from Liverpool's record signing against Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.
Fernando Torres was the talk of football in both England and Spain after his fantastic goal for Liverpool in his first game at Anfield.
He was on the front cover of all of the sports newspapers in Spain on Monday and was quite rightly receiving a lot of plaudits. English football is now broadcast on general Spanish television and they show every Liverpool game. The viewing figures are very good and Liverpool and Torres are very big news in Spain.
The Spanish press know Liverpool will be a major force this season. They know that, in Torres, they have now got a new alternative up front and someone with pace who will stretch the opposition and bring the wingers into the game.
It was just a shame for Fernando that Rob Styles took away some of his limelight. I wrote in my local Spanish paper that it was like watching a La Liga match, because you had 100 fouls, a penalty that wasn't, a referee who had a bad match and a Spanish striker scoring. You also had the whole of Anfield protesting against the referee and it was just like a Spanish match really.
You have to say it was a great day for Torres, almost perfect, but Rafa Benitez will keep his feet on the ground and not let him get carried away. The way he took his goal was fantastic and the way Steven Gerrard saw his run was great too.
I know everybody said after he scored his first goal against Shanghai Shenhua that the pressure was off him, but that was only a pre-season friendly. He has done it now in his first game at home and he will be under less pressure now. The general impression is Liverpool now finally have a genuine goalscorer in Torres. He is a player who wants to learn, wants to adapt and wants to do well for Liverpool.
He had lots of friends over in Spain watching the match and it was important for him to make a big impression. What is more positive than the goal for me was the way the team understands his game. He was also getting kicked and shoved around the park by the Chelsea defenders but you didn't see much protesting from him. That is good sign. He knew Terry was going to try and provoke him and be very physical, but he paid them back in the best way possible when he scored.
The goal is a weight off his shoulders and now he can concentrate on playing well for the team and helping Liverpool mount a challenge for the title. A good solid start is what Liverpool have been missing for the past few years but it's happening now. Manchester United have made an indifferent start and Chelsea aren't yet firing on all cylinders but I can see Liverpool topping the table by December. Then it will come down to the consistency and the quality of the players, and a little bit of luck which you always need.
I still believe he will need more time to make a real impact at Liverpool but he's certainly made a good start and is heading in the right direction. The impact Torres can make at Liverpool, I think will be huge but patience and hard work is the key.
RAFA: THAT'S WHY WE SIGNED TORRES
Rafael Benitez believes Fernando Torres has already proved the Reds were right to splash the cash to secure his services in the summer.
The club's record signing got off to the best possible Anfield start on Sunday when he opened his account against Chelsea and Benitez insists that moment of magic was a sign of things to come from the 23 year old.
"The players know now that Torres has pace and he can score the goals that we need," said the Liverpool manager.
"Fernando showed pace and quality, he scored a great goal for us and the supporters.
"He learned a lot from the game but it is still too early to judge him. He will need a little more time.
"He was playing against the best defenders in England and he had no problems.
"I am very pleased and for the future it was positive. He showed the quality he has and we will see more goals from him."
TORRES: I STILL HAVE A LOT TO LEARN
Despite making a stunning start to his Liverpool career with a brilliant goal against Chelsea, Fernando Torres insists he still has a lot to learn about playing in English football.
Torres is already a darling of the Kop after netting in the 16th minute of Sunday's showdown with Jose Mourinho's men as he made a first repayment on the record transfer fee the Reds splashed out in the summer.
Despite feeling a sense of satisfaction after opening his scoring account at Anfield, the 23-year-old is adamant he still has work to do before he is fully adapted to life in the Barclays Premier League.
"Everything is different in England and I have to get used to that," said the Spaniard.
"The way the fans live the game and sing throughout to create an atmosphere is different. Before the game, everyone sings as well. It is not the same as it is in Spain.
"The English game is more physical, too, but it's nice. It's end to end, it flows more and it doesn't stop so often. For the fans and for the players, that's great.
"Manchester United and Chelsea are the strongest teams, but every game is intense. You have to adapt your game according to your opponents.
"There is a lot of expectation among the fans because of the fee, but all I can do is work and score goals like I did against Chelsea.
"Scoring helps with your adaptation, but I don't feel any pressure, so the goal did not come as a relief."

one goal and fook all else in that match other than an easy pass which would have created a goal scoring opportunity hopelessly poor.
Torres v Forlan
Intertoto Cup 2nd Leg - Forlan goal
UEFA Cup 1st Leg - Forlan Goal and heavily involved throughout including direct assist for another goal.
2 matches - 2 goals
If your happy with Torres fine BUT I am much happier with Forlan and nothing will change my view Torres had the chance to be an Atleti legend he blew it through continual poor performances except v Barça.

I can see why you are excited about this year frank, but it's mainly because your summer signings have been so good. it's nowthe best squad you have had for some years. torres never got the luxury of playing in a very good athleti side
I don't seek to change your view on him, I just hope he continues to display all the attributes he has showcased in all our games so far ie pace , power, trickery, strength, awareness and goalscoring
He is EXACTLY the player we lacked
P.s your dig about his all round play is a cheap shot... that is in fact one of the things that has been most encouraging about him.. his movement is second to none and his work rate and hold up play have been impressive so far

they don't tell half the story though.
forlan is a good striker, but will never become world class.
Torres on the other hand, though not WC at the moment, will undoubtedly become one in the future( possibly in the next 2-3 years)

How comes Torres is so popular on these boards? I have watched La Liga regularly for the last few years, and more often than not have been disappointing by his performances. IMO he was better when he first came onto the scene. 1 in 4 for Spain isn't great either.
Not sure how you can say Torres will become WC, but Forlan can't either?
Forlan works harder, links up play better and is a fantastic striker of the ball with both feet. Torres is faster, but other than not I don't see a whole lot of difference.
