Re: Manager of the month for August
Sven without a doubt, fully deserved after the first three wins where in all fairness you expected them to struggle against West Ham on the first day with all the new players and the Champions Man Utd.
He gave Arsenal a very good game as well.

Hutchings or Sven, but likely Sven.
Even Steve Coppell with a far shout, that's the team no-one expected to pick up any points yet.

Re: Manager of the month for August
He is the biggest winner because everyone and their grandmother on the island blamed him for the 'disappointing' results with England, having the 'golden generation' at his proposal, and 'underachieving' with them. Even you should remember that l.r.d.
Now England struggle in the qualification, while Sven is doing very well with Citeh.
If he is no winner, I don't know who is. He must have a great time these days.

but sven did underachieve with england
he never managed to get the team playing good football
and this was a coleection of players who for their clubs regularly shine and outperform the same players they were up against when playing for england
it's been a good start for sven but he did spend an absolute fortune so it's not exactly a major surprise

Re: Manager of the month for August
He took over England boss when we were struggling to qualify for 2002. The 1-5 happenend, we looked great at euro 2004. It's only after that people started to hate and doubt him because england started performing like shite, but the results were always ok, even going out both times was penalties. He is having a good start here also.
He is a winner so far, but it's early days, of course he is a better manager than Mclaren i think even Sven haters even realise this now.
Watch he will lose a few games in a row soon, and people will start to say the same things, teams have worked him out, hes got no plan B.
The reality is the media never liked him because he didnt show passion and he wasnt english nothing else

Well, if 'underachieving' means qualifying for three major tournaments in a row, and reaching the 1/4 finals every time, I think that McClaren would love to 'underachieve' like that these days. Not that the quality of football has improved either, mind you.
Some England fans actually want Svenni back these days.

Re: Manager of the month for August
I don't understand why we are expected to backtrack over Sven's rein as England Manager just because he is doing OK at City. Look at the decisions he made:blutgraetsche wrote:COTR wrote:

1.Didn't play Hargreaves in his rightful position until the very last moment and therefore putting off the decision to choose between Lampard, Gerrard, and Rooney. He would even prefer to play Carragher and King because he knew they would fail whereas it was obvious to an internationally renowned manger that Hargreaves would succeed. He preferred Hargreaves getting booed than dropping one of his under performing/out of position darlings.
2. He would play Becks even when he was blatantly unfit. SWP is only showing his potential at Chelsea now but on the few cameos he had for England he always did well. Lennon was also sparking up the RW.
3. Just like Becks, he would continue to play Owen when un-fit instead of Crouch, Defoe, Ashton, Bent.
4. Took Walcott to the WC and wasn't prepared to play him even when Rooney went off and Owen was injured.
5. Always had Crouch play as a Target man even though he is $h!t in the air but good with his feet.
6. Played Scholes (our only passer) out of position on the LW just to accommodate Lampard. Ultimately forcing him to retire.
7. Regularly met up with (real and fake) club officials whilst on the job, showing no dedication to the cause. (you may think he has a right to do this but if he ain't dedicated to the job he shouldn't be doing it, many people actually care about the outcome even if he doesn't).
Sven did underperform for England, just because MaClaren is doing worse does not mean Sven did a good job and that he is a great manager. It just means MaClaren is is a worse manager. This is something we could all deduce from their CVs prior to them taking up the England job respectably.

Re: Manager of the month for August
Even if you agree with all of the points you made, and some of the arguments do hold water, how do you explain Sven's good / excellent club record then? If Sven is not a good manager, why does he do so well on the club level? That is the major point.
He didn't have much time to prepare the current Citeh squad, for example, which has quite a few players who have never played in the league before, and he is doing really well. Actually, Sven has not even managed a Premiership club before.

shazlx.. Sven is a good manager he did okay for England but like many he sold out to the devil after finding out the job was unmanageable for various reasons.....I would rather England go through 3 or 4 managers than get stuck with a boring defensive minded plunker like him at the helm...

Re: Manager of the month for August
I think he is a good manager and never said he was bad. What I'm saying is that he didn't care about the England job and hence always meeting up with club bosses for a new job. He liked the money and the lime light and so he always protected the senior, more famous players - media darlings - at the expense of the team. He knew that if he had the support of them, they would always defend him and make him sound good in the media. Now at City he wants to prove himself again, there are no media Darlings other than the irreplaceable (financially) but young Richards. Lots of money to choose players that can perform the role he wants for the team. and no F.A politics to keep the media happy.blutgraetsche wrote:Even if you agree with all of the points you made, and some of the arguments do hold water, how do you explain Sven's good / excellent club record then? IMO Sven did actually get the best out of the players he played (except Rooney and Gerrard - and Scholes) but the problem is he played the wrong players to the detriment of the team.
