they probably picked the 4 defenders with more votes. that's not a mistake of the footballers, but of the award organizers, who didn't make a distinction between full-backs and CBs, putting all of them in the same pot.

funny how every award and list is rated "a joke" here.

the thing is, any list presented or award will always be bashed, cause each person has his own preferences.

fifa WPOTY is a joke because people are saying kaká will win, cause it's unfair according to them. If C Ronaldo wins, there'll be a lot of people saying it's a joke, unfrair, etc. if Messi wins, there'll be a lot of people saying it's a joke, unfair, etc. if whoever wins, there'll be a lot of people saying iot's a joke, unfair, etc.

there's no escape. that's how it works.

I normally would agree with what todo said, but this list is just ridiculous. Only Kaka, Ronaldo and Drogba deserve to be there.

Even though Cech was out for 3 months when he came back the difference was clear for all to see.

Defence: Right back picks itself. Alves was a fucking monster. Left Back Evra as usuall doing all that needs to be done at all ends of the pitch. In the centre i'd go with Vidic and Chivu (7-1 aside had a monster season for Roma)

Midfield: Scholes had an unbelievable passing year last season and has yet to reach those heights this season. Essien was also a monster as well, aside from playing well in central midfield, slotted in capably in CB and RB. Those two make up my centre of
midfield. Ronaldo and Kaka pick themselves.

Totti has been a scoring machine last season, the golden boot winner picks himself. Drogba, pretty much carried Chelsea.

    --------------------Cech

    Alves-------Chivu----Vidic------Evra

    -------Scholes------Essien-----------

    Ronaldo-------Totti----------Kaka

    ---------------Drogba

Ridiculous lean towards the Premiership there. Cech on the basis of half a season is a joke, when Casillas did his usual matchwinning save thing all season long for Madrid. And if half a season is valid criteria, then (like I posted initially) Riquelme should be a shoe-in, but I accept that almost nobody in Europe will have watched him for Boca. And Messi should be in there because he's been fantastic in the 2007 calendar year. Essien? Ok, good performances that can be judged qualitatively, but nothing special in terms of stats or trophies to back it up. If we need a DM in the team I'd rather have Gattuso.

Think there were better defenders than Chivu last season. Would have Nesta myself.

    Iniesta over Scholes too.

So you've got to win trophies in order to justify a spot?

Essien had a monster season, even at CB he looked pretty solid. RB and CM he was awesome imo. I'm not saying that everyone has to pick him, but you can't disregard him simply because he didn't produce 'great stats' (which you're unlikely to if you spend half the season in defence).

He played half the season at CB so cannot be in for me because this means he was not particularly good for half the season (through no fault of his own)

Essien just seems to be one of these players beyond criticism on here. The c**t always pops up in best 11's regardless of what he does

I only had Kaka, Messi and Ronaldo right Laughing

I would have Casillas in goal, Alves instead of Puyol, Vidic instead of Cannavaro, Carvahlo instead of Terry, Essien instead of Gerrard and Totti or RVN instead of Ronaldinho.

4 centrebacks at the back. Priceless. Says a lot about the importance of fullbacks....

When you think about it, its not overly suprising these are the players who mostly excelled in European competition last season, seeing as its the only real way most of the players from other leagues see them.

Gerrard is in there because Liverpool got to the final. Rival players no doubt appreciate his importance to the team in terms of leadership and dive. Same can be said for everyone of the back 4- all important leaders. And infact the forwards too- Cronaldo, Kaka and Messi are now integral fulcrums of their team, as is Drogbreath.

    Its a team of leaders.

Amazed Buffon got in there playing in Serie B. 100 percent based on reputation and performances for Italy. Fair play loyalty wise to Juve, however how Casillas hasnt won it is a bit of an odd one. He was immense again last season for Madrid

Don't want to join in the "take the piss out of Gerrard" bandwagon, but Bernd's wise observation, bolded above, amused me, along with Kas's team:

    "The final team selected:

Buffon, Puyol, Nesta, Cannavaro, Terry, Gerrard, Ronaldo, Kaka, Gerrard, Messi, Drogba, Ronaldinho"

These lists are great – nine Englishmen and one German, reflecting, I suppose, the fact that the English are approximately nine times better at football than the Germans ok <Ale>

They should come over and play here then, for teams that are successful in the Champions League. I'd like to see pig Climber in a Liverpool shirt. ok

Well, I think I did say he didn't win major trophies. But basically my point was that there have been better midfielders than him, and if we do have to have a DM, it should be Gattuso who was equally good. I agree with COTR when he says that Essien is a tad overrated on this board.
