Ryan Babel - How far can he go? Empty Ryan Babel - How far can he go?

Post by Luis Tue Apr 15, 2008 8:58 pm

So Ryan Babel joined Liverpool in the summer for around 11-13 mil. A lot were pessimistic dismissing the money as far too much and some said he would/still will be worth it.

he's played 45 times and scored 9 goals. A lot of the time, in fact for over 90% of his games, he hasn't been used as a 'striker' as he says he preferrs to play, he's had to play on the left hand wing most of the time and to be honest he's blown really hot and cold. He looks an unbeliveable impact sub but when he starts games he never quite does it for me. Obviously he's got great skill, he gets in to good positions and he's quite strong. What really lets him down is his end product. He tends to panick when in good positions and his eventual pass or shot is fluffed. He can finish though, we've seen that, he's a great striker of the ball and I just think with a bit more confidence and maybe a bit more freedom up front he could become quite a player.

You should've signed Harewood. 1/3 the price and just as effective as an impact sub ok

I reckon he could get from Liverpool to Stoke in less than seven hours.

I think the position he plays now is quite different from the position he played most of the season - less defensive responsibility.

I think he has progressed this season, and in this final third has shown some more intelligence than perhaps earlier in the season, but definately nowhere near the finished article, if he can work on his footballing brain, hes an obvious threat being big quick and technically adept with his right foot.

I'm quite happy with him thus far, but he will definately have to take another step forward next season and show he is growing, this is after all his first season. I think after 3 seasons we'll be able to have a better idea whether he really will become a top player for us.

What would help is to have some stiff competition down the left to really get him competitive and working to get into the first team.

He will be a good player for Liverpool but first you have to find his best position. can you see Babel and Torres as a front two working? you probably need to play Babel/Torres + a creative striker.

i don't think he will be as good as Nani, Ronaldo, Kalou or Robben.

I think he is a good pacey impact sub, a very good athlete. I don't think he'll ever be a starter for a team challenging for the title though, and i still think he was overpriced.

I think he could become as effective as some of those players, for example hes plays more than Robben - thus can be more effective.

He can almost certainly become as productive as Kalou and Nani have thus far proven to be, perhaps not shown he can be as clever, but certainly as productive.

What we need is to put Benayoun's brain into Babel's body Ale

He has always more or less played as a left-forward in a 433 in his time for Ajax, I still believe the current system Rafa is playing will suit him and more importantly the other key players, he has never been a prolific scorer so I wouldn’t expect much from him in that department even though he can obviously improve.

If he could contribute 15 goals to next term i'd be content - it would be good progress - ultimately he has to work to become a 20 goal a season player, if he can acheive this is wholly uncertain but he has the capacity to deliver that sort of ratio just because of his physical size, pace and technique (on his right foot)

He was obviously an investment for the future, so the 12odd million cannot be weighed against one season IMO.

he has learned, much like Heskey had to, to direct his terrible control into space and use his athleticism to get to the ball first. Playing wide left though teams will get used to the fact that he's fairly impotent if you show him onto his left foot. I also think that without his physical attributes he'd be awful.

He looks one dimensional whenever i see him. Has no left foot so if he plays on the left it's not difficult to deal with him. Half of his goals have come at the end of a game Liverpool have already won. Looks a decent player nothing special. Liverpool paid to much for him i'd say.

People are going to slate me - but he reminds me of a Young Thierry Henry. If he works on his weaker foot and his touch then he's already got the size and the athleticism to become a dominant player in the EPL. Depends on how good his brain/awareness is.

How far can a black man go in today's world?

I think he has great potential but he needs to learn that he has got a left foot too. Ale

He's athletic alright, but he's got a relativly poor first touch and he doesn't seem to know what to do with the ball when it's at his feet appart from run in the general direction of the goal. If his footballing brain improves he could be brilliant, if it doesn't then he's still a decent player to have in the squad.

After signing Torres, Liverpool needed one more player IMO, a top class winger, and instead they got Babel Ale

Good potential, but he's not going to win you the title.

Decent impact player. Don't think he'll ever be a first choice for the Dutch though - least not when Van Basten leaves.

Looks dangerous without actually ever being dangerous.

He's gash, a bit like Ben Arfa. Also when did Grosso get so $h!t!? I was watching Lyon's game this weekend and he couldn't keep up with the pace in France of all leagues! My Grandpa can keep up with the Tempo in that league. Has he just gotten horribly unfit?

He's the typical Benitez player - good but nothing special. I don't get the feeling he will become much better than what he is now. I was never too impressed by him when I saw him play for Ajax and I feel the same way watching him for Liverpool. He's a good player to have in your squad, but he also personifies the type of player Liverpool need to stop purchasing if they want to win the league. They desperately need flair players who can change a game on their own.
