FEAR to become the norm? Empty FEAR to become the norm?

Post by Glenarch of the Glen Thu Apr 24, 2008 12:00 pm

we've seen fear football creep in in the Premiership over the last few seasons, where more than half the sides primary objective is to play 38 games and avoid relegation, to the extent that some sides only start playing when they feel they have nothing to lose (ie they are already behind or are playing a side they expect to lose to)

Will this now become the norm in European competitions, with most of the latter stages providing tight, defensive encounters?

Will we now forever be left unimpressed?

It's already the norm. Step forward Rafael Benitez, Otto Rehagel, Jose Mourinho, Fabio Capello (of recent years), et al.

Italian teams have been playing like this for years.

It all seems a bit kneejerk. We ddin't go and park the bus at Milan. Liverpool didn't at Inter...

Its only really Utd who have started doing it, largely because their previous gung-ho approach didn't work.

Piss flaps Hysen. We've posted largely similar threads at exactly the same time.

What are you wearing today? Please dont tell me a crisp white shirt with a slim black tie. That would just be far too unnerving

Mods, feel free to delete one or the other. Preferably Glenn's Ale

Well you posted your thread a good 7 minutes after I posted mine. But who's counting?

Come on Hysen, this thread is falling ever further behind mine. I'm starting to feel sorry for you.

Very Happy I'm not Otto, I'm not going to sit in my thread like it's a Q&A, desperately trying to drum up interest. I'll just wait here quietly. Dressed in some sexy underwear and if people want to pop in and say Hi that's fine by me.

    Hello Glenn.

There's a germ of truth in what you've said, but I actually found both games pretty compelling. In England we're used to teams not being able to defend with just four or five men, so they park the bus. Combine this with the fearful, conservative attitude you're talking about and maybe the future of the game isn't so beautiful.

The thing is I don't mind teams playing defensive football as a tactic as long as they hold the ball when they do get it even if they are conservative with possession. Watching conservative, yet astute passing can still be interesting but what we saw on Tuesday and Wednesday were three teams who could not retain possession for extensive periods (Liverpool were fairly good for the players they had) or even use the little possession intelligently to make the opposition feel a bit more uncomfortable.
