England have always been a club first country. We didn't even bother to enter the first few WCs and when we finally did the FA didn't give a f@ck and sent Stanley Matthews off on a goodwill visit when he should have been playing the USA in the WC. From the 50s managers like Walter Winterbottom got very little support from the clubs and after that the FA appointed someone who could handle the media and be nice rather than someone like Brian Clough who would tell them to f@ck off when he felt like it but actually had the balls to win the WC.
