My favourite national team is the 1972 German national team that won the European Championship (Germany's first participation), with Beckenbauer, Müller, Heynckes, Maier, Vogts and especially Netzer at their peak. This was undoubtedly the best Mannschaft ever, the most creative, most attacking and most dominant side we ever had. The main difference to the 1974 WC winning side, which was awesome also, was Netzer in excellent form pulling the strings in the midfield, instead of Overath, another great but lesser genius of a player.
My favourite match of that tournament was the 3-1 masterclass at Wembley, because of the quality of football played, and because of the significance of it. The first German national team to ever win there; England were more or less our bogey team before that match (despite the 1970 win), and we all know what happened after that.
My second favourite team is the 1980 EC winning side with a 20 year old Schuster taking the football world by storm, being voted as the best player of the tournament, Allofs and Hansi Müller playing some great stuff, Briegel and Hrubesch unstoppable.
Sadly, this was the only major tournament Schuster played for Germany, that's why the 1980 team should not be confused with the 1982 WC finalists, which was a different team on key positions . The 1982 side is responsible for the negative image die Mannschaft has abroad, due to the Battiston incident, the "Nichtangriffspakt" against Austria etc. Before that tournament, German football had a completely different image, so it's difficult to have sympathies for them.
My favourite match of the 1980 EC is the 3-2 win over Holland, with Schuster being simply brilliant, Allofs scoring a hattrick, some of the best football we ever played.

Both teams were before my lifetime though. I have watched all matches of those tournaments on tape, but was too young to watch them live. The best Mannschaft in my lifetime was undoubtedly the 1990 WC winning side (with my favourite player ever, Littbarski, at his peak), but the 1996 EC win was probably more significant due to the circumstances of it (huge injury crisis throughout the tournament, hostile environment ("For you Fritz ze Euro 96 iz over") etc.
My favourite non-German national teams are Argentina 1986 (Maradona! The first tournament I really watched), Brazil 1982, Romania 1994 (Hagi!) and Holland 1998 (cheered for them after Germany got knocked out). Probably a lot more sides I liked but don't remember now.
