By all means, you Germans have every right to not laugh at something you don't find funny.

However, the joke ISN'T directly offensive (i say "directly" - you can pretty much take any joke as indirectly offensive, as every joke does have a butt that is the object of the humour, so its only the directly insulting ones that you can really say are out of order)

Thus, I have every right to laugh at it as much as I like.

I don't think many people on here genuinely have any ill feeling towards modern Germans or Germany (beach towels aside) so try to take this into consideration when reading board banter.

It doesn't help the cause that the board hatemonger and resident lunitic happens to be a German, and by his repeated anti-everyrthing not German posts are often met by anti-German replies, it is not so much the country that is disliked as the individual

No non-racist person really does HATE Germany, I don't HATE Germany in the same way that I don't literally HATE Portsmouth or the people from Portsmouth, but in the context of a football match sly digs are exchanged based on stereotypes because of the rivalry.

In terms of the Holocaust, like it or lump it your country committed what is widely regarded as the greatest individual atrocity in human history. Whilst Germans of today are not responsible for it and the German people as a whole are more than welcome to not speak of it, I don't believe that for me as a non-German it should be a taboo subject or one that I have an obligation to not mention.

Just because it was an extremely shameful episode of your country's history doesn't mean you can force me to not mention it or act like it never happened, even if I refer to it in a flippant way as a sly dig.

Do Germans realise the pain and misery that our inability to win penalty shoot outs has caused? Im still suffering post-penalty depression harking all the way back to 1996.

The taboo of penalties- its a history of which we would rather never speak of.

Let me put it like this: during secondary school I think we covered World War II at least...three times in history class. And each time not just briefly.

And that's only school.

You couldn't avoid this topic in this country by any means, even if you tried REALLY hard.

In fact, an Australian friend of mine once told me that she thinks that Germany is actually the country that accounts for its past the most, while for example in Australia they are mostly still trying to ignore what they did to their aboriginees. Just as a random example.

This is definitely not about not wanting to hear anything about our past. Don't try to take the easy way out of this discussion.

I appreciate that. I really do. That's why I don't want to be silent anymore or wear a false smile about it. I am telling you how I and many others feel about it. I am very aware of my countries shameful past. I would confidently claim that I know more about it then you do. It's definitly not a taboo subject. Wrap it in its proper historical context and you won't hear a word of protest out of me.

To be fair, I do acknowledge the German acceptance and teaching from it completely.

The biggest example that I think Desgraciats failed to mention is that of Japan failing to teach in any form the atrocities committed against the Chinese during the war, which at best could be classed as a massive omission, at worst outright denial. That certainly puts Germany into perspective.

So i wasn't in any way having a go at the Germans' personal attitude about the Holocaust nor indeed their methods of teaching it in schools which personally i see as commendable.

What I did however have a problem with was the attitude of "this is how we do things, therefore you must do things the way we see fit on what for us is a touchy subject". However simply not using the Holocaust as a dig is not a particularly great ordeal for myself and not too taxing a challenge, so for the sake of the Germans on the board; I don't mind cutting it out.
