Honestly, you have no idea.
Do you actually think that we don't ever mention it here? That we are trying to pretend it never happened? *snorts*
Let me put it like this: during secondary school I think we covered World War II at least...three times in history class. And each time not just briefly.
And that's only school.
You couldn't avoid this topic in this country by any means, even if you tried REALLY hard.
In fact, an Australian friend of mine once told me that she thinks that Germany is actually the country that accounts for its past the most, while for example in Australia they are mostly still trying to ignore what they did to their aboriginees. Just as a random example.
This is definitely not about not wanting to hear anything about our past. Don't try to take the easy way out of this discussion.
Plus:
I don't see why for many people here it seems so hard to accept that...yes, for a group of people here making fun of World War II is offensive. So, if you're honestly not trying to offend anybody, just trying to be funny and simply didn't know that we are a little sensitive when it comes to this one topic ....why is it so hard to say "Okay, didn't know that, point taken, I'll stop"?
Why is it so important for you to make fun of this topic over and over again? As pete said before, it's not as if there weren't dozens of other German stereotypes you could work with. But NO, it has to be this one.
Why?
...
