I saw this the other day and no offence but it's rubbish. It had Ruud van Nistelrooy in the top 10!

All this shows is that the fastest players around aren't in the euro's. Also Nuno Gomes is in there, so it's obviously not accurate.

How on earth can Van Persie be the second fastest player in the Championship?!
Most of those players wouldn't be classified as 'fast' so it's a strange list.

Re: Fastest players at Euro 2008!
These are the facts, guys!I can't help it! Olic from HSV is the quickest player around.! Accept that!
To be honest, I always thought Bitterball Bouma was only fast when Fey was frying his bitterballs... But I am mistaken!

Are they facts, or are they just dodgy statistics? I'll say the latter.

Re: Fastest players at Euro 2008!
depends on how they're measured, like the speed of goals estimated by the camera: they estimate the distance based on something they know on screen eg the distance from the goal line to the penalty spot and time how it takes for the ball to leave a players foot and go past the line. Things such as camera angles etc are not accounted for.
In this case the players are all over the pitch so how do they know what distance they have run in a specific time. None of the players except odonkor run in a straight line .

Re: Fastest players at Euro 2008!
Over how many metres?
A bus can reach 60 / 70miles an hour, but takes around an hour to get there, whereas a Ferrari....
Is this about top end pace? or over 50metres for example... what are the measurements?

To visualise... If this was the average speed over 100 meter Olic (32km/h) would have run it in +/-11.25 seconds...
(100 meter runners run like 36+ km/h >>>100m in 10 seconds)

Re: Fastest players at Euro 2008!
But FG's point is, could Olic maintain that speed for 100 metres? Maybe that's why these stats are skewed.

I know... 100 meters is much too much.... but it is an easy benchmark if you take into account a topsprinter runs roughly 36km/h....

100 metres = the whole pitch
Football players don't need to maintain that speed for so long, the acceleration and top speed over short distances ('explosiveness') is more important.

Re: Fastest players at Euro 2008!
Surely that's oversimplified. A 100m sprinter starts at zero kph and accelerates (over about 60m if memory serves) up to their top speed. So average speed is fairly meaningless.
I'd argue that maintaining the speed is less important in football. Being able to cover 5m or 10m faster than your opponent is all you need to get an advantage - compared to say rugby where a fullback needs to be able to run the length of the pitch.
And then is it average speed over 1 metre, 5 metres, a whole game, what?
Basically it's all bollocks.

so .... They took a distance of 20 meters?

Re: Fastest players at Euro 2008!
WR for 100m is 9.72s
WR for 60m is 6.39s
therefore a top sprinter is travelling at 9.39m/s on average for the first 60m but 12.01m/s on average for the last 40m. So absolute top speed is a function of how long you've been able to accelerate for, as well as your ability to run fast.

I think that these stats are from one of the Euro 2008 sponsors, Castrol. Read this somewhere else already:

Perhaps this also expleins why mostly strikers and attacking players are on the list because they run the most meters and they run the longest sprints....
Or am I completely on the wrong track now? Strikers and attacking midfielders make long runs. Especially in counter attacks let say 50 meters on full speed. in the last 10 meters he runs the fastest so here he gets the speed of 32km/h... (Let say they take the average of 10 meters...)
Ballack, klose, Ruud, Olic run a lot of meters in their games and had long distance sprints (?)... Van Persie run fast and long in the counter attacks...(?)

How fast they run depends on what drugs they've been taking.
