Rotherham set to lose 17 points

Rotherham will have to start the new season with a deduction of 17 points if they agree to a set of criteria for a place in League Two next season.

The club has been unable to satisfy the normal conditions of Football League rules for exiting administration.

They have to accept the punishment, and also agree not to challenge the decision and to return to Rotherham within four years by midday on Friday.

Meanwhile the League will rule on the position of Bournemouth on Thursday.

What kind of horrific farce are they attempting to achieve? Luton will start on -30, Rotherham on -17 and Bournemouth possibly also on - points, all while being in a division with only two relegation spots.

League 2 will be weird down the bottom. This uber pt drops are vicious - if they really need to punish them this much, they might as well just relegate them. Playing a whole season chasing a 30pt penalty is horrible, they'd be better off fighting for promotion in the conference (and the playoff final losers would get promoted in their place...which would keep punty happy)

Bournemouth get the same penalty as expected.

What a bizarre league, If all 3 push on strongly they'll swallow up the rest of the relegation battle relatively early on.

Could see the two -17ers surviving, but Luton I doubt. 30pts seems too much. They'd have to be equivalent to at least playoffs in pts in order to get the mid 40s they need to survive. Not sure they'll have a good enough team - they're not like Leeds in League 1, who had a better team than most. It's not impossible - as you say, if they start well they have a chance. But it will be extremely demoralising when a dozen games in, they could have 8 or 9 wins and still be on negative pts.

Other teams will get complacent though, thinking they are safe from the off. Hopefully, for once, Shrewsbury can be focused on the more rewarding end of the division!

It's not as bad it could have been now both Bournemouth and Rotherham are also in that season long relegation mini league. Most important thing for them is that they don't get distanced by the two teams ahead of them, if they can they'll have an outside chance of escaping relegation.
