They don't seem to point out how muscle and pace has kicked skill and flair out of the game and that English teams are $h!t at passing (hence so are our national team).
People think EPL is entertaining 'cos MOTD's job is to take out all the $h!t and leave you with the good stuff.

This is a reasonably passable aritcle which has its skews, and hyperboles. But there are flaws on either side of argument. I love football, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't weight the pros and cons of every league. Like I have no qualifications in saying Real madrid is the biggest club in the world, I can't say X or Y is the best league. We might use CL, but if you add the victories + finalists, English teams are not toping it! But we are speaking of the leauge, than the league's elitists. If you look at the standard of an average player in Serie A, and Liga, they are much more astute than PL. For starters, Results like numancia beating Farca, or Bologna beating Milan at San siro gives a better idea. By comparison Arsenal completely dominated West brom, giving them ot much of a chance in their opening game. The gulf is huge. But accepted that there are more teams that forms the second tier, and probably third to the supposed top 5 (With City in). I also think English league should keep the improvement in collective strategy, and technical ability than the usual long ball, pure pace, and physical side to their game. Then, there wouldn't be disagreement over PL as the best league in the world. currently, they are improving. With more advanced players like WC brazilians in the league, it will surely help the most talented English players to start, and not just using their race to get into teams! So way to go there...

The national team is kinda irrelevant when most of the players in the prem are not English. Don't tell me you'd watch Bologna v calgairi and be thoroughly entertained, or even betis v numancia and expect a great quality match.
That's what makes me laugh about prem detractors they always say away from the top 5 or 6 the standard is really not very good at all, but it's the same everywhere in most cases.

All of the English players play in a league where the passing is not up to scratch and that doesn't effect the national team ?

To be fair Pierre, there's a marked improvement in passing these days. I agree it used to be 'vulgar' before, now it's improved in EPL. But that's quite right about the league's favorite style adapted in the national team, rather than say like middlesbrough or villa, who both play good football, of course with mix of direct balls, using pace to put crosses, etc.
If I might try a Freud, I think English players/kids play to get attention, and not necessarily enjoy the game or with mix of both. Not all players. Say from Scholes to Beckham, or Gerrard to ashley cole, rooney to owen - the way they were brought up has something to do with their style, and also their club's style of play. Sometimes, they do great things for the club, but for their national team, do the proverbial hollywood long pass, reckless challenges. One thing that they all have in common is the constant swearing at the ref. Okay I digress. But you get what I mean. The values of the game is fast changing to money these days, the assocation should implement a better line of thought to their sporting culture from bottom to top levels of football, then we will see better quality from future English players.

I cannot believe that you all are even discussing the idiotic article by Oli Kay. Its just some wild ranting by someone with the footballing wisdom of my left toe nail. Marcotti should know better than to waste time on a response.

to be fair, any partnership including Rio must be pretty $h!t.
Never liked Rio, but most of the time he's a class defender. But when he has an off day, he's terrible.
He has these off days a bit too often.

Same as Barca getting beaten by Wisla ? By the way Barca dominated Numancia , it doesnt show the strength of the league if your top team isnt good enough.
Milan didnt even finish in CL spots ,how about Inter beating Roma 4 nil away no1 team beating no 2 team 4 nil.
All arguments can be either used this way or that.

Farca's attack looked disjointed, and they can't really break down the opposition, they tried with some repeated crossing from the right. Of course, they dominated Num, but they, and milan for that matter got punished with their mistakes in both the leagues. Like you can't see Alves(and abidal) being out of position, and resulting in good counter, with a nice cross, and finish by a relegation battling team. In PL, You can commit such mistakes, and still rely on poor shooting ability of players in such relegation contenders. Also, in PL, the fitness and pace levels are more important, while in the other two leagues, you rely on ball control, passing, and awareness.
