Uruguay appreciation thread
La Celeste is back in the scene. I know, their greatest glories are old, but how many national teams can say they won 2 WCs and reached 4 WC semis? I truly hope they reach their 5th semis now and raise as a football giant again.

Welcome back!
Basically there are 6 footballing nations. South America and Europe each have 2 major ones and a minor one. Europe's minor 1, Holland, just has been less succesful than Uruguay.
We're destined to meet.

like fuck you can include yourself in that select 3. not petitioning for england here at all but it might help if you actually won a WC first.Persistence wrote:Welcome back!

Re: Uruguay appreciation thread
I can appreciate a team going ahead and then holding on to the lead, but S Korea create so many chances that it make it difficult for me to rate Uruguay.
Well done for getting this far, but they will be knocked out by the first team with good strikers they meet.

Apart from that 1 fluked win we did much better on average than England. The last 12 major tourneys, we only missed qualification once. We survived the group stages each time.MaloudaOntheDanceFloor wrote:like fuck you can include yourself in that select 3. not petitioning for england here at all but it might help if you actually won a WC first.Persistence wrote:Welcome back!

France is not football nation, because the population cares too little about footy. Holland has always been football mad. France was it for 2 months.

Re: Uruguay appreciation thread
Uruguay won only 2 WCs, but they were world champions 4 times. they won the olympic football tournment in 24 and 28. at that time, the olympic tournment had the importance of the WC. what a great team uruguay had. fifa didn't choose uruguay to host the first WC for nothing. uruguay was chosen because they were by far the best footballing nation in the world.
and when you take into account the fact that they are a nation of little more than 3 million people, you realize they are a phenomenon!
uruguay!

Its not about who is more "mad about football", its about achievements at the World Cup... and winning the trophy is quite important from that point of view, don't ya think?Persistence wrote:Apart from that 1 fluked win we did much better on average than England. Europe's 3rd team would probably be France (1 win, 1 final, 2 semi's, all in the last 30 years). 4th would be England, they are the only other team to win it....
Holland would be somewhere 5-7th, along with Hungary & the Czechs, the teams which reached 2 finals...

true. and more or less the same number of libertadores.
that's why I think they can win this WC if they beat Ghana and then meet Brazil in the semis and Argentina in the final. those would be clássicos, and in clássicos anything can happen.
if they meet Holland though, they are out.

I don't know, blue. I think it's 50-50. Holland is the European with the biggest chance of beating Brazil IMO.

Re: Uruguay appreciation thread
Bit unfair France & England won it at home. Home countries have an advantage. If we don't win the 2018 WC, I agree they're better.
Mind you when I initially mentioned minor I also had size in mind. Uruguay doing exceptionally well for a relatively smalll country (that was what the thread was about), same goes for Holland.
France and England are crap compared to Germany & Italy.
