How good has this WC been?
So the WC 2010 is almost over. We were worried to begin with and the group stages provided very little IMO but there's been some brilliant knock out games. The big players have genuinely failed to make an impact on the tournament and attendances have been largely poor.

Re: How good has this WC been?
I think your poll options are arkward. 2006 was below average in terms of games and 2002 probably even worse.
How can this WC be anythiing other than brilliant then?
That said, I thought it was pretty good, surprises everywhere, some memorable games. Didn't like the weather, pitch and vuvuz though. Esp the latter had a big influence on the overall feeling. Sadly.

Why would average be slightly worse than '06 and '02?

Ignore the 2006 and 2002 things, just vote
Brilliant
Good
Average
Awful
And then discuss it in relation to 2006 and 2002.
Personally I've enjoyed it a bit more than 2006 but loved 2002 a lot more.

Re: How good has this WC been?
Definitely better than 2002. Maybe slightly better than 2006 as well. The first week of the group stages was quite slow but I think it really picked up after that (minus Brasil-Portugal) even in the group stages. There was definitely some drama especially USA-Algeria, Italy-Slovakia, etc. Knockout games have been great. Don't think there was a single one that I didn't enjoy. The vuvuzelas are still awful but oh well.

Average. The only good thing is that it'll be a first time winner.
Only a really good game (Holland/Ur-a-gay).

Re: How good has this WC been?
It's been pretty decent with a lot of memorable things but without a huge performance from a big name or a truly memorable match(two big games going at it in extra time) then it loses a bit of what a world cup is about.
It'll be remembered for the crazy goal 2 yards over the line(probably the reason we'll have technology in the next one)
Vuvuzela mania
Fucking mad octupus
African team being a pen kick away from their first semi final
Maradona's antics
Some pretty good knockout games
And the first ever winner whoever it is for them.
I give it 6 out of 10

It's been very mediocre, a toss up between this year and 2002 for the worst ever.

Pretty horrible footballwise, pretty entertaining though. Still doubting where it stands compared to 2002 and 2006.
Lets compare EVERY group stage game and EVERY knock-out stage only then we will find the truth!

We're guaranteed a better winner than in 2006, but the KO games have lacked excitement IMO.

Brilliant! It's been like being a Cavendish fan watching a flat stage in Le Tour de France. Incredibly boring but in the end there's the certain win.

Thats only cause Italy 2006 is the worst winner in ages. Thought the KO were better then in 2006. More goals for sure me thinks.

Re: How good has this WC been?
Brazil - Shit
Argentina - Were always going to lose to the first decent team
England - Not even good enough to merit being called shit
Spain - Great team, at times frustrating and unwatchable football
Italy - Worse than even England
Holland - Haven't watched much of them but by all accounts zzzzzzzzzz
Portgual - Queiroz
France - Domenech
With the main teams struggling to entertain it was always going to be mediocre.
Will the final give us a truly memorable game and save the day ?
Probably not
I wasn't expecting much from this WC and have not been let down or pleasantly surprised.

Re: How good has this WC been?
Below average... Only one really big game (in terms of drama, competitiveness, stars and big teams) being Holland Brazil. I hope for another on Sunday though.
But good cup in terms of the small teams like New Zealand, Paraguay, Ghana, Slovakia, Uruguay.. but I was hoping to see more match up of star players against eachother.
Germany has done great, but in terms of drama, their destruction of Argentina, England and Australia were a bit one sided.

Re: How good has this WC been?
Better then 2002 which had some good games but lacked good teams and good players in the knockout stages. 2006 was too dominated though by good teams and it was mostly European and boring.
This time around we have had more of a mix and nobody figured South America would have 4 teams in the quarters which is a big succes for them. A surprise in the semi with Uruguay and a good drama in the Uruguay-Ghana and Spain-Paraguay games. England vs Germany also a good match up and also delivered in drama. Still think we lack one super game and perhaps it will come in the final.
In this decade though I still rate Euro 2000 as a better international cup.

Ok that was a bit harsh on them. They did play well in 2 out of 5 games which is more than most teams managed

For me, they were still the most rounded team in the tournament. The cause of their own downfall.
