Yugoslavia, what could ve been! Empty Yugoslavia, what could ve been!

Post by bluenine Tue Jul 13, 2010 6:05 pm

Imagine if Yugoslavia were still in existence, and had sent a squad for this World Cup.... a combined team of Croatia + Serbia + Slovenia + Montenegro + Macedonia + Bosnia & Herzegovina! Maybe it could ve looked something like this:

    Yugoslavia Squad 2010

    GK: Handanovic, Pletikosa, Stojkovic
Def: Corluka, Vidic, Kolarov, Ivanovic, Lukovic, Rukavina, Simunic
Mid: Modric, Srna, Kranjcar, Stankovic, Krasic, Pjanic, Misimovic
Str: Olic, Jovanovic, Dzeko, Pandev, Jovetic, Vucinic
    Handanovic
    Rukavina - Vidic - Ivanovic - Kolarov
    Srna - Stankovic
    Jovetic - Modric - Vucinic
    Dzeko

And there are so many other quality players I've had to leave out... Yugoslavia would ve been a top football nation by now, perhaps with a World Cup or two under their belt. The unified Czechs or USSR would ve been quite strong too, but not as much as the Yugoslavs.

Agreed. Thinking about what this squad could have won is definitely a scratch that needs ic-ing.

Yugoslavia, what could ve been! Aah

But like in your former thread I agree it looks awesome on paper, but working with bosnians, croats and having serbian friends I can tell you it would never work. It's not the same as with Spain and catalans, basks etc. These people really have their own culture, religion etc.

I thought I had posted it, but wasn't sure whether it was this forum or another...

I know what you mean... one of my mates is a serb, and she doesn't think too highly of the croats. But theoratically, that would ve been a footballing superpower....

Be quite fun theoretically if you had a world cup of merged nations. Say 16:

    N.America-Caribbean
    Mexico-C.America
    Brazil-Uruguay
    Argentina-Chile
    Colombia-S.America Minnows
    Arab Nations
    E.Asia-Oceania
    West Africa
    Central-Southern Africa
    France-Benelux
    Scandinavia-UK
    Germany-Poles-Czechs
    Iberia
    Italy-Greece (axis of Grease)
    Hungary-Yugoslavs
    All Ex-Soviet

Obviously you'd need to fudge in some countries here and there, some would be rather shitter than others and it'd be politically suicidal in real life, but you'd get some cool teams Smiley

We would need an India/China/Southeast Asia as well...it would be amusing to see 2.5 odd billion people still fail to come up with 11 decent footballers Laughing

I was just considering them in the E.Asia/Oceania - thought I'd better let them have the Koreans, Japanese and Australians or they'd have no chance

It would have been like Yugoslavia in 1990 surely?

A sure bet for a quarter final spot but nothing more...
