Maybe not everyone is interested in this tiny team from the Costa del Sol but with the arrival of sheikh Al-Thani and an injection of cash they are starting to put together a very interesting team. Last summer there were only modest signings for the most part and Jesualdo Ferreira did not seem to have the right formula. They even spent a fair amount of time in the relegation zone. It wasn't until they brought Pellegrini half way through the season along with a couple of more high profile signings (notably Julio Baptista) that they started to turn things around. They finished 11th in the league last season but they are already generating some big expectations.

They've signed Ruud van Nistelrooy, Jeremy Toulalan is nearly done, and Lucho Gonzalez appears to be on the way as well. They've been linked with just about everyone.

So they question will be, just how far can they go? In terms of infrastructure, they are comparable to Villarreal and they have managed a great deal of success in the last decade. So many of the teams in Spain are strapped for cash. Apart from Real Madrid and Barcelona almost every club's net spending during the summer transfer window has been negative. So to have a supply of cash from the owner, even if it is not on the scale of say Man City, is a real luxury and puts them in a more advantageous position than all the other clubs in the league bar Real Madrid and Barcelona.

With some of the more reasonable rumours plus the signings already confirmed, the squad could look something like this:

El vicepresidente del Málaga CF, Abdullah Ghubn, reconoció ayer que el centrocampista del Palermo Javier Pastore «es un muy buen jugador y es un objetivo para cualquier club» con posibilidades económicas, entre los que se encuentra la entidad de Martiricos.
«Tenemos muchas opciones» (de firmar al mediapunta)», pero este año vamos a tener a los buenos jugadores que estamos buscando concretamente para nuestro sistema» de juego, matizó el dirigente malaguista en una entrevista concedida a la agencia Reuters, con sede en el Reino Unido.

De este modo, Ghubn admitió que el Málaga CF se ha interesado inicialmente por el internacional argentino, de 21 años, a su vez pretendido por otros clubes de prestigio, tales como el Real Madrid, el Barcelona, el Manchester City, el Manchester United,el Juventus, el Inter de Milán y el Milán, entre otros equipos.

Abdullah Ghubn deja un mensaje claro para la afición malaguista. «Tenemos un plan para hacer algo muy grande y formidable, así que nuestro sueño no se limita a un solo nivel. Tenemos una agenda, una filosofía y tiempo para hacer algo muy especial por este club», indicó.
Y es que la ´mano derecha´ del jeque Abdullah Bin Nasser Al Thani recordó que el Málaga CF dispone para la temporada 2011/2012 de un presupuesto en torno a los 100 millones de euros, de los que, como volvió a reiterar días atrás, unos 50 millones serán destinados a firmar jugadores. No obstante, señaló al respecto que «no es un presupuesto limitado». «Tienes que buscar los jugadores apropiados para tu proyecto, así es que no puedes ser muy específico sobre cuánto te tienes que gastar».

Ghubn habló también de la enorme brecha existente en la Liga española entre los ingresos por derechos televisivos del Real Madrid y el Barcelona y los de los demás equipos. «Esto acabará provocando un descenso de la audiencia. Deberían acordar una distribución más justa del dinero de la televisión». Y advirtió: «Si ambos no comparten el pastel, no conseguirán la crema».

«No creo que veamos una solución pronto, porque nadie puede manejar este tema. Sería mucho mejor si hubiese alguien que pudiese tratar con esto y actuar como un juez, una persona que pudiera decir cómo debieran ser las cosas», concluyó el mandatario malaguista.

Malaga will have big team next year, but will it work? They will still be far behind Madrid and Barcelona, but will battle against the likes of Valencia, Villareal and Atletico. The battle for champions league spots is going to be fierce and clubs that won't be able to play Europe will be in huge debts.

Ruud is gonna earn 6million a year! Are they mental? And has he not had enough?

I hope he breaks his legs, cause he wont return to Holland anymore, sure we all love the Costa del Sol but after his career he can buy that whole fuckin Costa. He owes everything to Holland, and this is how they repays it? By playing for a mercenary team that will end midtable most likely.

In basketball Euroleague there always a talk "how good is to play for Unicaja and live in Malaga", out of big teams in general it's well known as a best place to live. It will definitely help to convince some football players to move as well... with some other convincing arguments

Joris Mathijsen firmará hasta 2013 con el Málaga

Joris Mathijsen será el siguiente fichaje del Málaga. El central holandés del Hamburgo ya ha cerrado un acuerdo con el Málaga para las dos próximas temporadas con opción a una tercera y esta mañana ha pasado el reconocimiento médico en las dependencias que Clínicas Rincón tiene en el estadio La Rosaleda. El coste del traspaso se cifrará entre dos y tres millones de euros.

El jugador ha acelerado su llegada y su revisión médica debido a que este sábado contrae matrimonio en Holanda y no quería demorar su traspaso al equipo de Pellegrini. El club anunciará en breve el fichaje del defensa internacional holandés, al que tiene previsto presentar oficialmente la próxima semana.

Mathijsen comparte representante con Van Nistelrooy, Rodger Linse, aspecto que ha permitido la celeridad en la negociación. Compañeros en la selección holandesa y en el Hamburgo, Mathijsen y Van Gol seguirán juntos en el ambicioso proyecto malaguista.

The plans sound very ambitious, to qualify for the CL, then build a world class squad, build a 60K seat stadium, etc. What does lend credibility to the idea is that Al-Thani has already won a contract to redevelop the Marbella waterfront and the football club is just part of his overall plans for the area.

I think he is legit. Unlike Ali Syed (who's already being run out of Santander) and the Dubai group that owns Getafe he is putting his money where his mouth is. There is clearly ambition here.

Sounds like Santi Cazorla isn't interested in joining Malaga but it still an indication of the sheikh's ambition to target players like this.

Bronzetti ha confirmado en Italia el interés del equipo malagueño. Se habla de una oferta de entre 35 y 40 millones que el Inter vería con muy buenos ojos para invertir en savia nueva.

El holandés Wesley Sneijder podría ser el gran bombazo del Málaga y uno de los golpes de efectos más importantes de todo el mercado de fichajes veraniego. El jeque Abdullah Al Thani ya ha demostrado que no va a reparar en gastos para convertir al Málaga en la próxima gran sensación del fútbol continental, al estilo de Chelsea o Mánchester City, y tras una avalancha de interesantes contrataciones (Sergio Sánchez, Toulalan, Joaquín, Buonanotte, Monreal, Van Nistelrooy, Mathijsen) se habla de un último y gran golpe de efecto para poner la guinda al proyecto que dirigirá Pellegrini hacia Europa. Han sonado Drogba, Pastore o Cazorla, pero el elegido podría el centrocampista holandés, al que precisamente Pellegrini no pudo entrenar en su año en el Real Madrid ya que fue traspasado al Inter, donde llevó al equipo a ganarlo todo a las órdenes de Mourinho. Después, rematando una campaña sensacional, lideró a Holanda hasta la final del Mundial. La derrota ante España le dejó fuera del podio del Balón de Oro, superado por el trío del Barcelona Messi, Xavi e Iniesta.

Ahora Sneijder podría tener una segunda oportunidad en la Liga BBVA en el atractivo proyecto que se está construyendo en Málaga. El agente italiano Ernesto Bronzetti lo ha sugerido en 'Sky Sports 24', donde ha asegurado que ha habido contactos ya y que el holandés es la gran estrella que busca el Málaga.

Mientras, 'La Repubblica' va más allá y asegura que el Inter vería con buenos ojos la operación básicamente porque las cifras son mareantes: se habla de una oferta que estaría entre 35 y 40 millones de euros. Hace un año la salida de Sneijder parecía imposible pero ahora las cosas han cambiado. La última campaña ha sido muy decepcionante para el equipo italiano, que tiene nuevo entrenador en la figura de Gasperini y que aspira a refrescar su plantilla para volver a aspirar a todo. Ya ha fichado a Álvarez, un centrocampista pretendido también por el Arsenal que podría desempañar un rol similar al de Sneijder, y Moratti podría encontrar en el dinero fresco del Málaga una vía para reforzar al equipo al gusto de su nuevo técnico. La pelota podría estar ahora en el tejado del jugador, también pretendido en la Premier League. El Manchester United, sin ir más lejos, se ha interesado por él el pasado verano y este ha vuelto a la carga. Pero quizá Sneijder no vea con malos ojos la posibilidad de liderar un proyecto nuevo e ilusionante como el del Málaga.

Usually I would laugh this off but Bronzetti usually knows what he is talking about. What a shocker if Malaga could pull a player of Sneijder's stature. That would a big BIG statement to land a player like that. Nothing wrong with the signings they've made, in fact they've been excellent, but this would be massive. Especially if they can entice him to come over other big clubs like United.

This would be indeed interesting idea, he also would in theory fit very well with RVN.

Fernando Hierro is the new sporting director of malaga, another good move by them, he is respected all over europe.

We have some Feyenoord fans here I guess - could someone write a few words about Malaga in their 2-0 win in friendy game? Goals were scored by Nacho Monreal and Kris Stadsgaard (never heard of him before, despite watching Malaga last season a few times and him playing there).

I think Stadsgaard was in and out of the team last year. Malaga didn't ever really settle on a back four as I recall.
