Carrick could and should have been.  Mystery really what happened to him.
Understandable really. Carrick has never performed with any authrourity for England. Even his good performances have been so so and tey were when he was performing well for his club. Now he's been poor for his club it makes sense not to have him in the team. I would prefer him over Gerrard though, but Barry is better in that role.

Isco Benny wrote:Those suggesting Cleverly over Henderson right now are having a laugh.  Henderson is an excellent water carrier. Been superb this season and thought he played well yesterday.
Henderson has been good this season but not as a CM in the double pivot. Cleverly has won a league title starting lot of games playing in a double pivot and the England midfield has always looked better with him in it.

Barry is to slow we worked that out 40 years ago and needs extra cover the advantage Henderson had over Cleverley is Captain Gerrard and was one of the first names on the team sheet. Henderson is knows how to play along side him better than anyone else. Closed matter really.

We played a good game if change is made it has to be simple not total chaos and really building on an out end team to improve our chances. That is Plan B subbing.

No, but barry should have been

He is still being punished for Ozil going past him in the last tournament. Hi problem was that he was too sporting, as most players would have brought Ozil down (I know I would) and taken a yellow.

shazlx is just trying very hard to appear as some sort of philosophical new age football hipster. Hence he's gone against the grain and said someone like Cleverley should play, even though it is obvious to anyone that has seen him play, that he is crap.

    Bless his cotton socks.

England had a decent game, just a few tweaks are required. There is no need for a transformation during the World Cup, you could do that after this competition is over.

A lot is being said about Rooney, his form in big competitions has been appalling lately, but he is still an unpredictable threat and possibly England's best bet against a tough defense. Its the same argument for Italy and Balotelli, and Italy has responded by picking Balotelli over their "Sturridge" (Immobile). I would play Rooney in his favoured position, or use him as a centre-forward when Sturridge needs rest. This is how I would start:

    Sturridge
    Sterling - Rooney - Barkley/Ox
    Henderson - Gerrard
    Shaw - Cahill - Jagielka - Johnson/Smalling/Jones
    Hart

I think Shaw is fearless and should start over Baines. In the heat, young players may be a good option in fullback positions.

Johnson did ok against Italy, I would pick him again. Maybe start Ox upfront to help him out a bit. Another option is to start Smalling/Jones as RB, a more defensive formation, with Barkley up the wing with freedom to roam. That may be a good option against Uruguay, because in all likelihood England will just need a draw (Uruguay's GD is worse).

Of course if Costa Rica upset Italy after England draw Uruguay, then England will be in a right pickle.

I wouldn't change the right side, as it looked pretty solid. Welbeck lacks technique but it would be difficult to drop him after the last performance, he helped Johnson a lot.

The left was a problem and it was Rooney. I don't think Baines is as bad as he was made to look by the lack of support from Rooney. Since Rooney is guaranteed to start he has to play in the central position, and sterling on the left. Rooney would be my first sub if things weren't working, but again that won't happen.

Rooney to be restored to central role against Uruguay

England boss Roy Hodgson is set to give the Manchester United striker an opportunity to play in his preferred role on Thursday following criticism of his performance against Italy

Even if Cleverley had done well for England in the past and the manager brings in another player to replace him and plays well or better than expected in the WC surely given the team set up it is a no brainer. Wink

Lets have goalkeepers who can't play football - its only 22 years since the pass back rule came in, what's the hurry ?

Lets have centre backs who can't play football because a centre back's job is to defend.

Let's have a knackered, old impact player for our playmaker - "he can be our Pirlo".

Lets have a winger with really poor decision making playing against Italy in his teens having never been to an U21 tournament and give him MOTM because he hit the side netting and ran about a bit.

Lets drop Ashley Cole but keep Gerrard and Lampard in the squad so that they can put their arm round a young player's shoulder when he has been sent off.

As long as they have good club form/looked good during some very selective and brief analysis from Shearer, Hansen and Lawro on MOTD - pick them !

Anyway - its game day, Uruguay there for the taking but I think we will draw. Its not just about how Manaus effects them when they are playing there its what effect it has 4 days later at the end of a tiring, high tempo season.

Was funny seeing Hoddle's team last night - so easy to pick the side when there are no consequences for you.

Strachan was correct with "that's the most attacking England team you've ever picked" and "that team looks great; providing the opposition doesn't have an attack".  Laughing

All this talk about Brazil being dangerous. Rolling Eyes

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-27920007

Former England striker Ian Wright is flying home from the World Cup in Brazil after his wife and children were threatened at knifepoint by burglars.

Four men armed with knives forced their way into his north-west London home and held his wife and children before making off with personal possessions.

Other players I'd like to see involved in the setup are:

    Huddlestone
    Wickham
    Berahino
Oxlade-Chamberlain (who is actually worthy of a spot in the squad above in hindsight)
    Cleverley

I honestly think Ravel Morrison and even Jonjo Shelvey should be integrated as well. Also Jay Rodriguez once he returns from injury.

How did Hart's lack of ability on the ball harm us?

The Radio Times has Adrian Chiles profiling England's Captain Marvel - a decent man touched by greatness  No

In the buIld-up to the World Cup, ITV laid on a dinner for our clients – the advertisers, advertising agencies and media buyers we do business with. Roy Hodgson was kind enough to come along for me to interview in front of our exuberantly enthusiastic guests. He was happy to take some questions from the floor, one of which went: “I don’t expect a straight answer to this, but who is the one player who can win the World Cup for England?”

“I’ll give you a straight answer to that,” said Roy. He paused very briefly, just long enough for the room to fall even more silent, before saying, “Steven Gerrard. Steven Gerrard can win us the World Cup.” Enough said.  Shocked

The question itself is idiotic. That a manager like Hodgson with decades of experience actually gives an answer to that is very telling.

England desperately need an identity. A football identity to build a philosophy on, your own. No matter how good or bad it was in the past, it's lost now. Hodgson is not the right man for that, but even with the right man at the helm, you need a lot more than just the right manager, it starts with the grassroots.

On the positive side, the technical ability of the new generation of players coming through is obviously superior, so some changes to the better must have taken place already. But that talent needs to be polished and put in the right framework to be effective.

Hodgson should never have answered the question but he is as in love with Gerrard as Adrian "Steve Gerrard" Chiles, Clive "England's best player under Roy Hodgson" Tyldesley and Andy "the skipper" Townsend.

Once you have marketed the teams you then do the same with the players, they become huge brands and are undroppable.

Some people were very upset with Hodgson for keeping expectations down - it doesn't sell Carlsberg or Nike shirts.

Its been like this since 2000 when the FA decided to appoint a Scotch man who was media director for Saatchi and Saatchi as chief exec to exploit the popularity of English football caused by Premier league and Beckham.

    Seems like a football man...

    Saatchi & Saatchi[edit]

From 1988 to 1999 Crozier worked for advertising agency Saatchi and Saatchi, becoming media director in 1990, and then being appointed as joint chief executive from 1995 alongside Tamara Ingram.[3][5] This occurred in the wake of a change of ownership which saw the departure of the founding Saatchi brothers to form M&C Saatchi.[3]

    Football Association[edit]

Crozier came to public attention as the surprise appointment to the role of chief executive of The Football Association, the governing body of England's national game, football, aged just 35 and having had no experience of business in football.[6] He replaced Graham Kelly. In his short tenure from 2000 to 2002, the FA relocated headquarters from Lancaster Gate to Soho Square, appointed the first ever foreign England national team manager, Swede Sven-Göran Eriksson, and became a more commercial organisation maximising its revenues. He also reduced the average age of the FA's staff from 55 to 32, progressed the Wembley Stadium redevelopment, and reduced the FA's ruling body from a 91 member FA Board to a 12 member committee.[3][6] His moves were not without criticism, with complaints from some about lack of consultation and of acting beyond his powers.[6] He was replaced by Mark Palios.

While at the FA, Crozier reportedly identified some members of the England national team as the Golden Generation.[7] It was a term later criticised towards the end of the decade by some England players as having been undeserved, and of causing undue expectations and pressure due to the fact they had at the time, and in years since, failed to win major tournaments.[7][8]

    Royal Mail[edit]

Crozier became the chief executive of the Royal Mail Group in February 2003.[5][9] Entering the post, Crozier described his remit as the "biggest corporate turnaround programme in the UK".[6] Crozier initiated a programme of modernisation and reform, in order to deal with changes in the service brought about by reforms beginning with the Postal Services Act 2000.[9]

In Crozier's first three years, the Royal Mail division produced record annual profits of £537m in May 2005, making £2m a day in profits, up from £1.5m a day losses before he joined.[10] The Group overall had been transformed from recording losses of £1.1bn at the start of the turnaround plan in 2002 into a profit of £355m in 2005.[3] The Post Offices however in particular continued to operate a loss.[10] Royal Mail chairman Allan Leighton said it was a "fantastic turnaround" but also that there was still "a huge amount to do".[10] The newly formed mail regulator Postwatch were however critical that it had failed to achieve 11 of its 15 licence targets during the previous financial year.[9] As the postal service was opened up to competition in early 2006 however, Royal Mail recorded losses of £10m in 2006 and £279m in 2007.[10]

His reforms included highly controversial large scale post office closures in the thousands, layoffs of Royal Mail staff, changes in working practices, and the ending of the second daily delivery and moving the first daily delivery to later in the day.[3][3][10][11][12] While at the Royal Mail, Crozier's salary, one of the largest in the country for the head of a publicly owned body, was criticised in light of the changes being made to the Royal Mail workforce.[10][11][12] Ongoing reforms eventually led to large scale industrial disputes and strike action in both 2007 and 2009 onwards.

    ITV plc[edit]

On 28 January 2010 it was announced Crozier would be leaving the Royal Mail later in 2010 to become the next permanent chief executive of media group ITV plc.[13][14] ITV plc is one of three partners within ITV Network Limited, the not for profit organisation who run the ITV television network, the United Kingdom's oldest commercial network established in 1955, and the first funded by advertising but also with a public service mandate, set up in order to compete with the BBC. Crozier was replacing Michael Grade, who announced his intention to leave in April 2009.[14] Crozier will be given the task of increasing ITV's advertising revenues which had fallen with the proliferation of new channels in the British television market.[14] On announcing the appointment, ITV chairman Archie Norman said of Crozier that he is a "very strong leader with a great track record in delivering transformational change."[14]

    Next summer in Czech Rep:

    Butland

    Jenkinson
    Stones
    Jones
    Shaw

    Chalobah
    Wilshere

    Sterling
    Barkley
    Ox

    Wickham

    Morrison, Shelvey, Ince, Powell, Berahino.

Shelvey is a dark horse - doesn't have the pace of Barkley/Ox/Sterling so can't run at players and commit them but he has the best vision.

They need to get tough with the clubs next summer and make this happen.
