were those teams the best in the world in the early 60s? Probably. This Santos beat European Champions Benfica and Milan at the Intercontinental Cup, and is considered by most Brazilian pundits as the best club team ever. Santos and Botafogo at that time had 8 players of the Brazil starting XI that won the WC in Chile. Those are in red.

Santos: Gilmar; Lima, Mauro and Dalmo; Zito and Calvet; Dorval, Mengálvio, Coutinho, Pelé and Pepe.

Botafogo: Manga, Rildo, Zé Maria, Nílton Santos e Ivan; Ayrton e Élton; Garrincha, Didi, Amarildo e Zagallo.

Champions of the WC in Chile in 1962:

    Gilmar [Santos]
    Djalma Santos [Palmeiras]
    Mauro [Santos]
    Zózimo [Bangu]
    Nílton Santos [Botafogo]
    Zito [Santos]
    Didi [Botafogo]
    Garrincha [Botafogo]
    Vavá [Palmeiras]
Pelé [Santos] and Amarildo [Botafogo], after Pelé was injured
    Zagallo [Botafogo]

    Good post

Santos were very famous during that time, and were considered by many as the best team in the world. During those golden years Santos won 9 state championships; two Libertadores cups; 6 (out of 10) Brazilian championships, and Recopa Sul-Americana, apart from 2 intercontinental cups.

For a long time after 1970, most people used to blame brazil's last of success to the fact that most of their best players shifted base to europe. Its sad that the south american clubs have become more like feeder clubs to the big teams in eruope these days. But there were days when they were as good, sometimes better than their european counterparts...
