"People need to believe in them rather than criticise and say they cannot play together," Gilberto told BBC Sport.

"They need to lift them and boost their confidence. They showed they can play together. They made it hard for us."

In a weird way the fact that Brazil had so much of the ball actually helped I think. Our shape was completely compressed back into our own half, so there wasn't a big enough gap between Gerrard and Lampard to create a problem - and we attacked so little through the middle that they couldn't fall over each other then either.

One England pundit has some sense at least.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/A23430520

BBC Sport headline reads: 'Lampard appeals to England fans'. No he doesn't. He doesn't appeal to any England fans that I know!

Chelsea supporters will disagree, of course. Top tip if you've never been to Stamford Bridge, don't get a seat behind the goal. We did it once and me mate Tony Thompson got right on the end of a Fat Frank special. Thirty rows back he was.

Take a seat on either side of the pitch instead - sure you're in danger from a Shevchenko special if you're there but he won't be playing much next season so I reckon you're safe.

On to Talinn we go to face Estonia. Frank says we fans must be patient 'cos Estonia are far better than Andorra. What, better than a bunch of amateur hill farmers and hackers who play the game as if you get to cash the ref's cards in at the end of the match?

I said to the missus we had to be able to beat them Estonians. She warned me that public schoolboys are dead good at sport. Be a very lame joke if it weren't true. Bless 'er.

Estonia is a tiny country with a Cr@p football team. It'd be harder to turn a mattress over. Stop bleating, Lam!

The astute ones among you may have twigged that I'm not Frank's biggest fan at the minute, although I have to say I find all
the booing a bit juvenile. Still, if all else fails there's a bright future for the lad in panto.

Any road, Becks is back - back for good by the looks of things, like Take That God help us - and you know that England are at least going to create some old-style chances.

It'll be a performance from the Eriksson days - tepid, predictable, downright annoying but saved by a Beckham free-kick and an Owen toe-poke. 2-0 says I.

But when we come back from our summer holidays, McClaren, and your not so doughty lieutenant, Tel, can you do three things, PLEASE?!

    1. Never pick Phil Nev again.
    2. Bench Frank and leave Gerrard to do the meaningful stuff.
    3. Ignore the first two and gracefully resign.

    Here's hoping...

There's always an excuse for a non-british pundit. Leanardo was just being nice, Gilberto is just being nice. <Ale>

    GILBERTO IS NOT A PUNDIT.
    he plays for Arsenal, remember?
Maybe, just maybe, the players that are not outspoken twats and don't play for Newcastle (which is just shorthand for the former) don't try and insult their colleagues at every opportunity...

Its a totally different thing-what a player says and what a pundit says.
The primary role of pundits is to analyse and be critics, the primary role of players it to, um, well, play...

Pundit, player, whatever - he's someone involved with football that is giving his opinion in the media.

The media would have asked him for his views. Its not as though he'd have written in his comments for fucks sake.

What do you expect him to do? its not like he really cares who England play in midfield!

The BBC aren't paying him his wages like they are Leonardo. He can say what the f@ck he wants! It makes sense if fact to support the Gerrard-Lampard partnership as it means that England would be less competitive if they face Brazil in the future scratch

While Gilberto was being diplomatic in the main, he did add:"They are both great players - especially Steven Gerrard," he said.

"He is almost the complete player, he goes forward well, defends well, passes the ball and makes it very difficult.

So even he can see that Gerrard >> Lampard Wink

I rather enjoyed this response to Robbo's piece on the BBC site:

"Did anyone else notice that Lampard cracked open a can of John Smiths and said 'ave it' after his 'shot' (the one where he booted the ball out into row Zz) on Friday?"

Gilberto has to be diplomatic about these things. Imagine if he sayed something negative about the partnership. It could be construed as him saying something negative about the country in which he is ultimately a guest in. He doesn't need the kind of media backlash than can follow that, same as with most footballers hence why their interviews are just a barrage of cliches.

Gilberto's not stupid. He KNOWS Lampard and Gerrard are primadonnas in the EPL who enjoy protection from their teammates and the refs. Especially Lampard who benefits by having so much class around him.

If I were playing in the EPL, I too would say Lampard and Gerrard is one of the best midfielder tandem in the world. I too would don my Swedish hat and sing "waterloo" and do what Sven does best which is play to the gallery. However, since we are all fans we tell it like it is. Biggrin <Ale>

Yeah, there's no way Gilberto could have criticised them in any way, because both are key players for his club's title rivals, and it would be silly to come out with unprovoked critical statements.
