It's on baby! Thursday June 21st 7pm my time on Telefutura and FSC. There's no love lost between the North American rivals. Canada have impressed quite a lot of people. They have two good players in De Rosario and De Guzman.

Oh say can you see by the dawn's early light... Biggrin <Ale>

You're stuck in the 80's Kimbo! Every year "soccer" is getting more and more popular here, and I'm sure it's the same in Canada judging by their team's current performances.

You should watch them two Canadians I mentioned earlier. De Rosario is lots better than Lampard. True story my man!

This game is gonna be fiercely contested. There will be crunching tackles, snot flying out. Do not fear Kimbo! take a good look at the future with us Americanos. Biggrin <Ale>

Football is a 5th rate sport in the US, Padded rugby, Rounders, basketball, and ice hockey are all bigger - that won't change. NASCAR is probably more popular aswell, and golf. Infact it's a 7th rate sport at best.

That's in US only. Rugby, Football and field hockey are quite big here. They are not major commercial sports, but people know thier "soccer" and pretty much everyone has played it while growing up. loads of european/african/south american immigrants are here especially in Toronto and areas close by so no shortage of football knowledge or the sport being played.

if you saw him in mls or regular usa games you'd think he was good (aside from his corners which are god awful). just most people see him in major tournaments where he is just as bad as lampard and dinho in wc 06

You know, I was actually going to create a topic based on this for discussion. I still might. But you raise a good point. If soccer is only the 7th best sport in this country and yet it is 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in every other country in the world, I don't think it is a bad thing to be 16th in the world and be as decent as we are.

Now I am sure the size of our country and economics might be brought into this discussion. However, there is nowhere near the popularity among youth for soccer. Yes, there are leagues. But you never see kids in this country go to the park or the street and play a game for fun unless they are Mexican and Latin American (only ones I see play in the park by my house unless it is a league playing), European, or some nation outside of North America. They play baseball, basketball, football. To compare training and schools to identify talent here in the US as opposed to those in Europe is a joke as Europe is far more advanced in developing talent. It is rare that any of our best athletes will ever play soccer here in the US. The other sports are too big. There are hardly any soccer only stadiums here in the US. We are so far behind in popularity, passion, training, athletes, facilities, etc and have so many other sports dominate soccer that it amazes me we can compete on the level we do despite our country's size and economics.

Post by jdbfs Fri Jun 22, 2007 4:29 am

The USA win wasn't pretty. USA was the better team for most of the match but a header by USA defender Onyewu led to Canada being called offsides right as he shot the ball and scored to tie the game. The goal came in VERY LATE in the 5th minute of stoppage time when stoppage time was only 4 minutes. 15 seconds later the game ended. This was a VER controversial finish and one that will be talked about a long time here. USA slacked off like they normally do around the 75th minute and Canada scored to make it 2-1 and made it a match.

Typical US. Score a couple of goals before the half, miss numerous other opportunities, have a huge lapse 3/4 of the way into the match, and hold on for the win. But this was much more controversial than any match the US has had in a while. I am glad the US won but I almost feel guilty about it. But the poor play at the end of the games by the US is getting old.

Yes, Bocanegra glipped him over. The tackle wasn't that bad to be honest. But his flip was bad and fortunately he wasn't hurt. For the most part though, De Guzman was pretty quiet for most of the game. He didn't get enough touches and he was quiet for the msot part.
