It was either Neuville or Helmes. Ballack wanted him to be in the squad, because of his experience. Don't think he'll play much anyway, so it doesn't really make a difference.

Odonkor instead of Marin was the more controversial decision, check out the Mannschaft thread.

Odonkor is a useful player, the ideal super-sub, no doubt. But if had to choose between him and Marin, I'd prefer Marin.

Trochwoski had a good match yesterday, that probably cemented his place in the final squad.

    Not nominating Jones made sense.

Jones you mean? No, but he simply doesn't fit into the system Löw intends to play. He is a 'pure' DM, and we play a 4-4-2 with two central midfielders in the centre, who have both defensive duties, but need to drive the team forward also.

Jones would be useful if we intended to experiment with the system during the tournament, which we most likely won't.

We prefer versatile players, makes sense to me. Frings or Rolfes can be a 'pure' DM if necessary, but I really don't think it will.

Pay closer attention to our midfield:

    Roger Guereirro

if Germany win their first two and qualify, you could see them not taking the Austia game too seriously..

I'd say Austria will probably get a win in one game, just because they're the hosts, and the hosts pretty much always perform a bit better than expected

Austrians don't seem to be that interested in football though (read that somewhere), so the crowd may not be particularly inspiring.

Not true, especially not against us (hate us, see us as their rival). Their national team has just been Cr@p for decades now, that explains the low expectations. Football is still by far the #1 sport in Austria.

What? I don't think that otto actually believes that. When it comes to football (but not just football), Austria absolutely hates Germany. Their greatest moment in football history was beating Germany in the 1978 WC, most of the players of that team are now legends there, and important people in Austria's football microcosm (league, media, etc.).

That's probably their biggest problem also, they basically define themselves over 'big brother' in the north. They rather see us fail, than win anything themselves.
