The expanded version should mean it is easier for Scotland and other home nations to qualify but Smith added: "It will make it easier for other countries such as England who failed to qualify for Euro 2008.

They should seed the top 10 countries, so the amount of games can be reduced

Top 10 can play friendlies v eachother, while the others play qualification.

So three months after Euro 2008, the most entertaining and competitive football tournament in recent memory, UEFA react by changing the format of the competetion to allow weaker teams to qualify? Utterly stupid and damaging to the tournament's credability.

And presumably this will make it harder for smaller countries to host the tournament in the future, as they will need even more high-standard stadia to cope with the extra games.

Awful idea. The European Championship is great as it is. The only thing they needed to change was the draw for the competition leading to teams playing each other twice.

To give a chance to smaller countries to get experience. To take into account that countries like Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia, are no longer competing as one country - Yugoslavia. To take into account that the Czech Republic and Slovakia no longer compete as Czechoslovakia. To take into account that Ukraine and Russia no longer compete as the USSR or CIS. To take into account that these nations have a good chance of qualifying and that will be at the expense of others. For example England, who were Cr@p admittedly, but the expansion of members of UEFA means that both better nations and smaller ones will miss out.

So how do you suggest that the Belarus, Latvia's and Lithuania's get experience on Europe's top stage without this? Not looking for argument. Genuine question. And without it how can they progress? With sixteen qualifiers they have little chance if any and the gulf in experience and class will grow. This at least gives them a chance without taking away a position from a nation that deserves to be there. It may not be perfect, but what other options are there?

Under the current system there are more good countries than there were as well as smaller ones who will miss out on experience, etc. as a result of their only being 16 countries. You might not agree with it, but there certainly is a point to it.

How would that work? There were few dud in Euros. Also there are more good teams as well. When do you decide who is top ten in Europe? Also wouldn't that be likely to mean that the smaller countries will just keep missing out. Andorra needs to keep playing against Englands etc. to improve. Otherwise they might as well not be allowed to play. Expansion gives them a slim chance to go and qualification matches against the best is essential for them and others to improve.

Again you might not agree and if you don't, no problem, but how do you get a system that allows such nations to develop?

Finland, Serbia, Scotland, Norway, ROI, England, Norn Ire, Bulgaria.

Hands up who thinks having those teams in Switzerland/Austria would have made the tournament better?

Why use the example of Andorra they are NEVER going to be good at football no matter how many times they play decent teams, they are bunch of part timers ffs!

It may not have improved the quality this time, but why judge by one tournament? It will take a few tournaments to measure its impact? I chose Andorra, partly because they have made progress. For them losing 2-0 to England was progress that they can build on. Eventually they can look to keeping a clean sheet and then nicking a result. And then they can build further. Never is a long time. A few years ago I'll bet you would have said Greece would NEVER win the European Championship, but they did. As Andorra makes progress they can become better if they join a Spanish or French league or get to play friendlies against top teams near them. Why deny them the chance to improve? Why bully poor little Andorra? They have different targets and can only improve with qualification against the best of Europe. Belarus or Macedonia for example is an example of teams that could improve or regress depending on opportuntinies. The time to judge this isn't now. It's effect won't be seen for at least three or four tournaments.

England clearly would have made the tournament better from UEFA's point of view. Lots of cash for TV rights in England, we are prepared to pay more for football than anybody.

This is about getting the 'big' (i.e. rich) football nations to always qualify, to maximise revenue - just like the Champions League.

As with certain comparable situations, it depends whether you take the view that we/UEFA owe something to the smaller nations, whether the priority is to build up the historically weaker ones by giving them experience, or the quality and competitiveness of the final tournament.

It looks like this is just a money-making exercise.

Being an altruistic type I think the smaller/weaker nations need experience. Te question is how to give them that. If it was suggested that a couple of stronger nations have places withdrawn from them to allow a weaker one in well imagine the furore on here, or perhaps a last chance play-off? Again hardly a need to imagine the response, so this really is all that is left to give them experience and in the long run strengthen the competition. It requires time to see the effects.

So far I haven't heard any solutions. If not this, then what? Preserve the status quo and the richer better ferderations get richer, more experienced and better at least for now. Then what? Where does that Latvia or Montenegro or Macedonia for example, let alone the real minnows.

It looks like this is just a money-making exercise.

It might well be, but with the added bonus of helping some small nations gain the experience that I would hope everyone at least agrees they need if they are ever to progress. Remember, that it was not an exactly rich federation - Scotland that proposed this. And if the smaller nations come to the party, won't they also get a slice of the revenue that it generates?
