Brazil to win the next? (a theory) Empty Brazil to win the next? (a theory)

Post by mongrel hawk Sun Oct 19, 2008 1:03 pm

when in a crisis, Brazil usually make a surprise. when in heaven, Brazil almost always underperform.

    1958
after a tragic defeat to Uruguay at home in 50 and being kicked out by the great Hungary in 54, no one believed Brazil could win a WC in Europe. 17-year-old Pelé, Didi, Zagallo, Garrincha and other great players won that WC and are considered by some pundits the best national team Brazil ever had.

    1962
an exception. Brazil entered as favourites and won.

    1966
Brazil entered as favourites in England and, with a little help from the refs, were kicked out (literally and metaphorically) in the group stages.

    1970
in the last game in Brazil before that WC, a crowded Maracanã booed the team during a 1-0 victory against Paraguay. coach Saldanha was sacked and Zagallo took over. according to the press, Pelé was old, out of form, and the title would obviously slip. tha team was extremly bashed by the Brazilian press before the WC. Brazil won that WC, and that team is still considered by many pundits worldwide as the best national team ever, with great players like Pelé, Jairzinho, Gerson, Rivelino, Tostão, Carlos Alberto Torres, etc.

    1974
Brazil entered as favourites and were kicked out by an amazing Holland. the 4th place was a disapointment.

    1978
favourites alongside Argentina and Holland. the 3rd place was even a bigger disappointment this time.

    1982
Junior, Cerezo, Falcão, Sócrates and Zico under the legendary Telê Santana. after the group stages, all the world was sure who would win that WC. then Brazil beat Argentina 3-1 convincingly, and that was that. before the semis, boring Italy, that had drew all 3 games in the group stages, was in the way. Brazil needed only a draw. Italy beat Brazil 3-2, deservedly.

    1986
the same great players under the same great coach, and a new weapon: Careca. favourites. lost to France on pens in the quarters.

    1990
an exception. Brazil are always among the favourites, but this time they werent The Favourites. lost to Argentina in the second round.

    1994
24 years since the last title. lost their first qualifying game ever, against Bolivia in the altitude of la Paz. that team was a disgrace, Parreira was stupid, too defensive. if Brazil hadn't won with that great team of the 80s under the great Telê Santana, how the hell would they win with a mediocre team under a stupid coach? but that team had balance, a very good defence (conceded only 3 goals in 7 matches) and Romário.

    1998
Rivaldo, Bebeto, Dunga, Cafu, Roberto Carlos and the fenômeno Ronaldo. clear favourites. before the final against France, a Brazilian newspaper asked one journalist from each country which team they thought would win the final. all of them said Brazil would win, except one. and this one was not the French pundit, who said Brazil would win. this one was the Argentine pundit. he was right, very right.

    2002
Luxemburgo fell after the Olympics, Leão took over and fell too. then Scolari, who lost to Honduras. and how that team was bashed. and then Scolari decides not to call Romário. everybody in Brazil wanted Romário, except Scolari. Argentina and France were favbourites. Brazil won.

    2006
it would be a walk in the park. Kaká, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Adriano, the magic quartet. after trashing Argentina 4-1 in the confed cup, pundits b egan to say that team could not only win the WC, but also display a better football then the 1970 team. a disaster in the quarters after playing boring football from beginning to end.

    2010
Bashing, bashing and more bashing. Dunga is an arsehole, this team is a disgrace. so?

according to Europeans, mostly British, Brazil will win it:

Brasil will always be there or there abouts, because the quality in the side is almost unrivalled.

Don't think Dunga is the man to do it though, and besides I hate his defensive setup and the fact that players like Baptista, Elano, Josue and Gilberto Silva get picked, above more talented players.

I reckon he'll be gone by the WC though, which you'll obviously qualify for.

    @calidad

I agree that Dunga should be sacked and that Brazil are playing horrible football. but that's exactly the point. Brazil usually win WCs after a couple of years playing horrible football.

I guess maybe that's because the players enter the WC decided to prove they are not useless bastards like the press and the Brazilian people think they are. when everything is hunky-dory, they enter the WC as football stars, with an arrogant attitude.

believe it or not, but before the 2002 WC that team was more bashed than the current team.

You could probably do with a player of Juninho Paulista's ilk to turn things round to be honest. You can dream Ale

Dont disagree with you really. it happens that teams get bashed and they unite even more and in Brazil with that pressure and the love for football it will either unite a team or break it. Dunga has already shown he can win a title with ugly ugly football. by the time of the world cup he might have a Ronaldinho,Kaka and perhaps both Pato and Adriano in top form. that is alot of quality and if they are treated as underdogs they are even stronger.

Ronaldinho is starting to find his feet at Milan. If he gets fit and in form for the next World Cup, it'll solve a lot of Brazil's problems because he lifts his entire team, even with Josue + Gilberto in midfield.

Even if Brazil, Italy, or Germany are in sh*tty form. I would still have those 3 as favorites at the World Cup.

Brazil need a new coach, but he doesn't need to be hired now. The sooner, the better, but a good coach doesn't take too long to figure out how to do things right. Felipão was hired in 2001. Brazil had some depressing defeats under his control (lost to Bolívia, got eliminated from Copa America by Honduras, etc), but he did an excellent job at the WC. He had to make some very difficult decisions. Choosing a 3-5-2 formation, playing Kléberson and Gilberto, dropping Romário out of the squad, etc. He was very criticised by the brazilian press.

I think that Muricy Ramalho is the better choice, Luxemburgo is an asshole.

My old man tells me that you had nothing on us that year. I told him that you guys probably had your best team ever in 1958. He says we had Valeriano López (was actually better than DiStefano while they played in the Colombian league, and legend has it Bernabeu wanted to sign him instead of the Argentinian, but was told no so Bernabeu signed DiStefano for he didn't want to return to Spain empty handed...some signing eh!), Juan "Loco" Seminario (Zaragoza's lone "Pichichi"), Victor Benítez (won EVERYTHING with Milan) Juan Joya (won EVERYTHING with Peñarol crushing Real Madrid in the process), Huaqui Sanches (Alianza Lima legend), Juan Valdivieso, Toto Terry among other greats.

He tells me you only defeated us thanks to two free kicks, and two gifted ones at that. The great Didi tied us with one in Lima, and he beat us with another one in Brasil.

According to him the two best teams that year were in the same group Perú and Brasil, and that a very good team was not going to Sweden. It turned out to be us. He swears we would've gone far in WC '58 just like in the Berlin Olympics of '36. However, the two best teams from South America then had to KO one another before '58 WC. <Ale>

I too would laugh about the corrupt fuckos in the FPF, but there's just so much you don't know about the level of corruption that goes on in Perú all the way to the top. Ignorance is bliss ain't that right Sheva! Biggrin <Ale>

Didi got his free kick in Brasil for the 1-0 win and the ticket to Sweden. Great maestro Didi. <Ale>
