The lone striker Empty The lone striker

    Listening to the Guardian podcast:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/audio/2009/feb/05/football-weekly-itv-everton-liverpool-david-beckham

Raphael Honigstein quoted Klinsmann saying in the summer:

"He always wants to play with 2 strikers upfront at Bayern,

he saw Torres play so well for Spain and he really likes him, etc...

but he wouldn't want to be Torres in a couple of years time as a sole striker running around all the time,

because its such a tough, tiring job to do that it takes to much out of you and it takes away from you natural finishing, etc..."

Do you agree with what Klinsmann said, not just about Torres but in general about lone strikers?

Who have been the top strikers played upfront on their own in recent years, did their form dip because of this?

Maybe you think there is nothing wrong with playing 1 upfront as long as you provide the right support from the midfield/wingers.

I really hope Liverpool fans don't think this is another attempt by me to have a go at Rafa for selling Keane.

Villa plays as a lone striker a lot of the time but he has Mata and Joaquin playing in very advanced positions - wide forwards more than wingers really. Plus David Silva in support. So in that situation it works fine.
