Sir Alex Ferguson admits Old Trafford's atmosphere can be subdued
Sir Alex Ferguson has accused sections of Manchester United's support of "sleeping" during weekend games.

Ferguson admitted some Premiership matches were subdued compared to the Champions League clash with Celtic.

He said: "I keep saying I wished every team could bring 6,000 fans with them like Celtic because it does create a competitive element between the fans."

Ferguson added: "On Saturdays they come here and half of them are sleeping, waiting to be entertained."

The Scot's comments are an echo of former captain Roy Keane's critical comments six years ago about "the prawn sandwich brigade", who he claimed attended United matches.

Ferguson said after Celtic fans flooded Old Trafford: "It created a far better atmosphere and our fans are better because of it."

He added: "I think back to some of the great Wednesday nights - electric. We need that more often.

"We have to get that atmosphere right throughout the seasons. Some weekends they come here to be entranced, to see magic.

"But we need their spirit to ignite the team at times. It should not always been the other way around. A fan can stir his team."

Everyone knows Old Trafford always has a shit atmosphere, they have a great away following but at Old Trafford there is nothing really.

Not strictly true - there are a lot of prawn sandwich eaters in the OT crowd, which means that the passionate ones simply cannot make enough noise to fill the whole stadium. They do have passionate supporters, just not enough to fill the stadium.

Yep, thats why our away support is one of the loudest in the league.

I think the press are making a bigger deal than it is. He's basically saying he wants more away supporters to get a competitive element between the fans.

We do have to many corprate fans as well.

Were you at the Birmingham game in Rafa's first season where we lost 1-0 to a Darren Anderton header? It was abysmal that day.

I've yet to go to a european game () but people I speak to say we have the best fans in england - but only on European games and big games. In general, against middle-of-the-road sides, our atmosphere isn't bad, but it isn't great either.

Take west ham recently for example - 100 years of the kop and apart from 10 minutes all seemed really quiet.

Fair play though, I was watching the Utd-Spurs game last weekend and their support was appauling (sorry parky ), you could hear the Spurs fans singing "your support is fucking shit" over anything the Utd fans mumbled.

Still say, best away support in the premier league.

I think we cut the number of tickets United fans get at the Riverside because of the trouble they caused every year.

I don't mind best fans in terms of behaviour.

More in terms of noise and support for there team.

The i.r.a chants along with the bigotry is impressive i guess, the drunks getting thrown out in the middle of the game also.

Man utd home support is a bit flat, but it is always full, and the club itself has done things to make the atmosphere worse not improve it.
