Still think City will win it by about 6 points or so. Negredo already showing he can score goals, Jovetic to come in at some stage. Defensively look a bit unstable right now but that will pass.

Too early to change my mind on anything - after around 8 games I think you get a definite indication. So if we're still top of the league by then I will say we are a certainty for number 19 <Ale>

Post by Jaime Fri Aug 15, 2014 3:56 am

Wish I'd seen this before. Of course I've just seen that Pulis left so that changes my table. Biggrin

    1) Predict the Premier League table.

    1. Chelsea
    2. Manchester City
    3. Arsenal
    4. Liverpool
    5. Manchester United
    6. Everton
    7. Tottenham
    8. Newcastle United
    9. QPR

    11. Southampton
    12. Hull City
    13. Aston Villa
    14. Burnley
    15. Sunderland
    16. Stoke City
    17. Swansea City
    18. West Ham
    19. West Brom
    20. Crystal Palace

    2) Predict the top scorer.

I'll go with Rooney. Looks in pretty good shape in the preseason. Scored 17 last year in the shittest Man Utd team in recent history.

    3) Which players are going to make a name for themselves this season?

Probably Alexis Sanchez. He was probably Barcelona's best player last year. Never got the credit he deserved. Sturridge is going to prove he can do it without Suarez.

    4) Who will be the Premier League surprise package?

Burnley. Even though they have no foreign players (GASP!) they will do fine.

    5) Which summer signing will prove the best? (Feel free to answer at a later date)

I think Cesc is going to love having permission to pass the ball forward again. For as little as they paid for him, he is going to really do the business. I think we'll look back and see that Fraser Forster might well just save Southampton.

    6) First managerial sacking?

Seems like it's about time for Allardyce.

there's a clear divide between top 7 and the rest, would be surprised if anyone breached that. but within those groups it's pretty open: I think any of bottom group could end up in relegation battle and any of last year's top 4 could win title.

I've gone for Arsenal to spring a surprise - Ozil having had a season to adapt, addition of Sanchez, Ramsey to continue form & Walcott return - they look very strong (though desperately need some CB cover).

Chelsea look very strong throughout squad - still it's gonna depend a lot on Costa for goals.

Liverpool have lost Suarez but otherwise stronger - perhaps Champions League will affect them but otherwise they should be able to carry on momentum from last year & finish top 4 again, possibly with a title challenge.

City look a bit stagnant compared to Chelsea & Arsenal and I could see Toure struggling to reproduce last season form & he was so key to them last year, hence I've got them slipping to 4th. perhaps compensate by finally doing something in the Champions League.

Man Utd should improve but they ain't got the defence to finish top 4 at the minute (are they seriously going into season with just Evans, Smalling and Jones at CB? scratch ). think they going to have to put up with a transition season this time as Van Gaal changes system & personnel, then they should be ready to really compete next season.

Predict The Premier League 15/16 Empty Re: Predict The Premier League 15/16

Post by Luis Fri Aug 15, 2014 4:11 pm

Quite an interesting take on things there Debbie.

I think you're right in saying any of the top 4 from last season could potentially win the title. Arsenal and Liverpool would be a shock for the bookies and most pundits but I wouldn't be overly surprised to see us or Arsenal win it.

The thing with Chelsea is even if Costa doesn't measure up to the expectations they always seem to share goals throughout the team anyway - Schurrle, Hazard, Oscar, Fabregas, Salah, Willian are all capable of chipping in, Drogba will probably score a few when he plays and their defence usually does quite well on the goals front (Cahill, Terry, Ivanovic all usually chip in). So if you add in a firing Costa who does perform well and the fact that defensively they are probably the best and have the best keeper in Europe at the minute then I can't look past them.

City will undoubtedly focus on the Champions League this season - they have to become serious contenders in that soon or Pellegrini will be under pressure. They have the squad to manage all the competitions but as you say they may become a tad stale - Aguero continued to struggle with injuries, Jovetic hasn't got going yet, Dzeko seems to go through phases and Negredo is maybe on his way out. In terms of technical ability though they are the best team and they have a very versatile squad with a number of players who can play anywhere across the front line. Defensively they may improve though which means they will probably cut out the silly defeats that almost cost them the title and be able to win games 1-0 at times.

Liverpool and Arsenal are at the same level IMO - they have a very threatening first 11 that can blitz teams when they want to but both are still naive and aren't as smart as Chelsea or City when it comes to getting the job done when it really counts.

Sanchez might bridge the gap finally for them and be that player that they've been itching for since Henry left but what if he can't handle the pressure? He's not always going to be their saviour which means there's still a big requirement for Giroud, Oxlade and Walcott to step it up. Defensively they have to improve big time but it's still mentality that might let them down. Let's see how much impact landing that trophy has on them.

The pundits have already written us out of a title challenge and a lot even out of the top 4 but I think this is lazy journalism. All I keep seeing is comparisons to Tottenham and Bale but if you look a little deeper we've improved the squad in a sensible fashion. We've spent big money and bought a lot of players but we would have done so even had Suarez stayed. We aren't going to lose our threat going forward - Coutinho/Lallana, Sterling and Sturridge is still enough to worry any club. Henderson seems to be going from strength to strength and our defence simply has to improve from last time out so I can't see how we're going to be drastically weaker.

United will be really interesting. If they had sorted the defence out and maybe added a world class midfielder I'd have them down as a serious contender but for them to topple all the sides I've already mentioned while they're adjusting to a new manager and style would be too much this season IMO. But then without Europe they can focus solely on the league so there's always that advantage.

So if you add in a firing Costa who does perform well and the fact that defensively they are probably the best and have the best keeper in Europe at the minute then I can't look past them.

    Chelsea signed Neuer? Wink

true enough on the goals through the team though.

The only interesting thing is whether Man U can break back into the top 4. Such an uninspiring season, the sport needs shaking up.

So you think having 4, maybe 5 teams that can possibly win the title is uninspiring? Not to mention the fact that about 8 teams could all go down. Name a league more exciting than that.

Meh, same clubs as always, why do I give a shit which of them wins? There will be a 8-12 way relegation battle because most of the league just wants to survive and rake in the TV money, it might be interesting towards the end, but do any of them really deserve to stay up?

I can't name a more exciting league, because the other major leagues are just as broken.

Football isn't there for your amusement though Kimmy. Lots of people do give a shit which one of them wins. You weren't complaining when you were pushing 4th a few seasons back. Money doesn't always dictate what happens. Yes the majority of the teams can't win the title or push for 4th in the league but it would be impossible for that to happen. There have to be strong teams and weak ones.

Yes it is. And money does dictate what happens, to say otherwise is delusional.

Personally I would like to see the whole thing collapse in on itself so we can start again with a system more like the NFL.

Everyone thinking we will finish top 10 is staggering. Our aim for the season is lower than what we did last season when we had our worst run of form in decades.

it was more a matter of eliminating other possibilities. I start from 20 and worked up. teams like Palace and Southampton might've been top 10 possibilities but manager loss & player loss has screwed them. Villa are in limbo. 3 promoted teams aren't likely to be finishing top half. Hull, West Ham, WBA: all meh at best. that left me with Stoke, Swansea, Newcastle & Sunderland as the most functional-looking of the relegation fodder clubs so they took 8th-11th
