Joey Barton arrested

The controversial star was questioned by police over an alleged argument with a taxi driver in Liverpool.

It is understood the incident took place in the Wavertree area of the city earlier this month.

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said: "I can confirm a 24-year-old man, from Widnes, was arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage and assault.

"He has been bailed until May pending further inquiries.''

The 24-year-old is no stranger to controversy. In February, Portsmouth fans complained after he allegedly made an obscene gesture towards them during a match at Fratton Park.

He was fined by the FA after dropping his shorts and baring his bottom at Everton fans in October.

Barton was sent home from a pre-season tour of Thailand after becoming involved in a brawl with a schoolboy Everton fan.

He was also fined six weeks' wages by his own club after stubbing a cigar out in the eye of young City team-mate Jamie Tandy at a club Christmas party.

It's nothing to do with being Welsh - Scott Parker is a thug, Francis Jeffers is a thug, whereas Danny Gabbidon and Gareth Bale aren't remotely thuggish.

And I was being silly - Robbie Savage is a less than average player who does a good job in a physical team.

Parker's primary role is to run around a lot kicking people. Jeffers is a thug because he, like Bellamy, has a very short fuse. Remember his red card in the Charity shield?

Parker is a thug because he goes in for 50/50's hard, he gets clattered himself but he doesn't cry about so people assume that he was in the wrong.

Parkers role, and his actual game, doesnt involve kicking people. He goes in for a lot of tough tackles, in my view still flies to the ground too quickly in making them, but never makes a malicious challenge. There are various lesser defensive midfielders in the country, whose job is supposedly to break up the play or whatever, who do just kick and trip players without aiming to do any other - Nicky Butt at Newcastle is an example - but Parker is not amongst them.

Besides, if its a players job to run around kicking people then at least he has some sort of excuse or rational for doing so. People like Paul Scholes have quite the opposite job, theyre supposed to be creative players, yet Scholes, for instance, regularly assualts players every couple of months if not weeks, presumably just for his own pleasure.

As for Barton, I think he is a waste of everybodys time.

I was just using Scholes as an example in suggesting that a player who isnt required to kick people yet does it anyway is more of a thug than one who kicks people as a job requirement. I was just joking really as far as that point goes. But I do think Scholes is quite a dirty player at times. Besides from his sending off at Liverpool, I remember a similar incident at Newcastle a few years ago where he turned and swung at someone, but it was off the ball and the referee didnt see. Then he has a tendency to sometimes make quite clumsy, nasty looking challenges.

I would maintain that he is atypical in that the vast majority of english thugs do not have ginger hair, or for that matter football skills.
