It's a good shout, no offence but the league he has played in is a lower level than la liga, and ramos can play across the whole back 4 and as defensive midfield. Whereas Alex might be better than him purely as a central defender I would still say ramos overall. And don't forget ramos plays for real who are notoriously bad at defending and Alex only played half a season (I think).

i think it was more a case of ferdinand and vidic being strong together, as soon as one was injured and there was silvestre or whoever they were not the same

pretty much ramos was playing with guys like silvestre for the whole season at real (cannavaro, helguera, pavon have all been poor).

Thats not true and you know it!

The onlt game in the whole season in which Utd got properly outclassed was when Ferdinand was missing (the milan game) - in the gmaes that Vidic was missing they carried on their winning streak as well as doing pretty damn well in Europe (beating Roma 7-1)

    @110%

Alex proved in it in the league and in the CL - like no CB has done in ages. Singlehandledly slaying Arsenal along the way.

THe league might be 'easier' but as soon as Alex was injured (only two months btw) PSV's crumbled like a house of cards during a hurricane.

Defensively Alex might be the pefect defender: on the ball, position, vision, heading tackling etc - the only thing people might nag is his speed, which is not slow, but simply not a sprinter.
Offensively he can be better than most fullnacks that are only rated for their attack. can put a cross in, side plitting passes, makes set pieces (freekick goals), immaculate header of set pieces, can jump extremely high, simply amazing foot technique for a defender (even for a brazilian defender), attack build up and what not.

Saying he was inan easier league only confirms that you weren't paying attention to the CL. Which he was the best defender in the group stages and second round.

Some youtubes to seal the deal (all from this year):

So, who are the best players who have failed to make this list.

Notice how Cannavaro the FIFA World Player of the Year, 2006 has had a bit of a fall from grace and is now not even in the top 50 according to Marcotti.

I'd also put RVP in the list, along with Ricardo Carvalho who had a good season in my opinion and Alex. Any other suggestions?

    39. “Lucho” Gonzalez (Porto)
A box-to-box dervish who gets his fair share of goals and is a natural leader to boot. If only he played in a higher profile league...

Yet, he has no qualms about mentioning players from the Eredivisie - with no disrespect meant to that league.

Screw Carvalho and Miguel, who needs them?
    Deco's a lazzy bastard too.

    Riquelme? Never heard of him...

Top 3 players in the world at the mo are pretty much nailed on

    1. Ronaldinho

    2. Kaka

    3. Eto'o

Drogba, little Ronaldo and Essien just miss out.

Big Ronaldo and Sheva have the class to give Eto'o a run for 3rd if they get fit.

Ibra, Alves, Buffon, Lampard, Henry, Fabregas, Totti and Rooney too high.

No Ribery, Keita or Bodmer ?

    No Quaresma in there ?

Huntelaar better than Crespo ? Yikes

Didn't mention Quaresma as he plays in a 'low profile' leauge as stated by this twat, and well, he's been great for club...but he's still lacking on the country bit.

If you mention Quaresma, you HAVE to mention Robben...and higher up as he's had a big impact for Holland.

I have no qualms with Robben not in there (this season), because he's a borderline player, but some of the other inclusions are Yikes . Especially their positions in the table.

Just a 'big' league watcher Luso, and reads the paper about some clubs at the other leagues.

Oh I'm sorry, was the list purely concerning their CL form?

If it was then Dinho and Eto'o shouldn't be there - of course, if we're factoring league and international form in there, then Ronaldo is right up there in both regards.

In the CL he still managed 6 assists and 2 goals - despite playing decent(ish)
