'Chelsea akkoord met Feyenoord over Drenthe’

    18/7/2007 11:43

'Voor Feyenoord is de sky zeker niet the limit, maar als een club bereid is echt een enorm hoog bod te doen, dan gaan we praten', aldus Vogelzang. 'Kom dat bod er niet, dan zeggen we: Royston gaat door bij ons.'

    ========

Chelsea have made a bid of Feyenoord's asking price (10 M euros), final details are being worked out.

One of Feyenoord's demands was that Drenthe would keep playing in Rotterdam for at least another year....that was no problem for Chelsea, the clubs are now working out the details of that lone-deal.

10 M euros is a steal for Drenthe Ale

Crazy. Robben is leaving for Madrid it seems.

Drenthe sounds a good player but it seems crazy to get rid of Robben and replace him with Drenthe

It makes sense for them to loan him back for his development. However with Bridge's injury and Robben's constant problems they could do with a left sided player.

Why not? One will give you 20 games, the other 40. The differences in quality are not that vast either.

Feyenoord's price tag on Drenthe was higher. It's maybe 10M + a year for free + few friendlies (we got those too for Kalou & Kuyt, those matches are worth a few M too)

According to AS, voeltbal.nl posted a report claiming that Drenthe has fired his agent because he's pushing Drenthe's transfer toward Chelsea, while Drenthe wants to go to Madrid. His father will allegedly be handling the negotiations now.

    I looked it up :

    Drenthe en zaakwaarnemer uit elkaar

    17 juli 2007, 12:42 uur

    =============

All it says is that his agent wasn't experienced enough, that the agent was fired and Royston's father took over as agent.

It doesn't say anything about what Royston wants.

This news apparently broke yesterday, so the timing of a Chelsea transfer today makes sense to me...

I figured AS spun the story somehow. Thanks for that.

I would actually prefer if Drenthe signed for Chelsea. I think Drenthe is a mediocre LB and in the left wing we look set to have Reyes, Robben, and Robinho (who will probably be played somewhere else) so there is no point in bringing Drenthe for him to rot on the bench.

Looks to me like one of Chelsea/Madrid will have Robben and the other will have Drenthe.

Drenthe as a LB is below mediocre btw. He's a great LM though and a decent LW.

The difference between Drenthe and Robben is that you're comparing a LM to a LW : Drenthe is a midfielder and Robben is a forward.

I agree with Torrente though that he has no place in the Madrid squad at the moment, at least if they are to get Robben and keep Reyes and Robinho.

I wouldn't have a clue either where he would play at Barça.

He'd be great for teams like Atlético, Zaragoza or Valencia (even if Valencia have Silva).

That's the problem. Mijatovic and Calderon obviously didn't see him play for Feyenoord so they just assume he's a great LB. The Madrid press are even hyping him to be the next Roberto Carlos which is ridiculous. Drenthe has to play in midfield or not at all.

And whether Drenthe plays deeper than Robben or not, they will still be competing for the same spot on the team with Reyes and maybe even Robinho. That's why I don't think there's any use for him to come to us.

That's the strange thing about Drenthe's situation. He seems to be linked with teams that have his position well covered. In Barcelona he would be low in the pecking order as well as in Madrid. And even in Chelsea, he would be behind Joe Cole and Malouda (not to mention Robben if they keep him).

What amazes me is that local media (AD, Rijnmond) do not report thes deal. They tend to be the first if anything partaining to Feyenoord happens.

    Maybe not.

Mourinho has said that Chelsea will be playing with 2 wingers this season though allegedly.

So he may plan on playing Cole on the right, otherwise they'll have to rely on SWP playing there

Telegraaf aren't the most reliable newspaper, but they will not have made this up: Feyenoord have stated there's no deal with Chelski (and say the Independent article is BS).

    http://www.telesport.nl/voetbal/1900257/___Chelsea_heeft_beste_papieren_voor_Drenthe.html?p=1,1

BTW NOS (Dutch BBC) mentions on their CEEFAX, Calderon has stated on some Spanish radio station, that Real still want Drenthe.

If both Real and Chelski want him we will not sell him for just 10M. Furthermore Drenthe staying at Feyenoord (on loan) seems to be a pre-condition for any deal.

Remains to be seen what will happen, Calderon said he's confident; we're working on the deal, but it's in the early stages.

Would be a good idea to Loan back Drenthe, as we would have Robben, Reyes and Robinho.
