I don't think they have U-19 teams. TBH, I think there should be just U-17's and then U-21's or even U-20's instead of the U-21's. It is ridiculous that some 23-yr olds can still play in junior competitions. It would also cut out on the amount of these tournaments. This one, for example, has been passing by without a word from anyone, including the Germans, French, Spanish or Portuguese.

My oh my ,Germany were absent in the 2 most important youth tournaments this summer. And will be most likely KO-ed by Serbia from this one.

Decided to give Spain vs Greece a watch this afternoon and have to be honest, have been thoroughly unimpressed. Neither team have had much ambition and both, Spain in particular, seem intent on passing it about the defense until the 90 is up.

    Serbia 1-0 Germany at halftime.

Germany have been the better side and are unlucky to be losing. Serbia have looked a threat when counter-attacking but I would expect to see more German pressure in the second half and it will be difficult for Serbia to keep them out.

These double standards are nothing but racism. More than half of the English, French or Dutch national team have their roots in former colonies, for example, yet nobody seems to care. But if a German international doesn't look like one of those stereotypical blond & blue eyed SS Totenkopf divisions marching in those cheap Hollywood movies, something is wrong. No matter if those players were born and raised in Germany, no matter if they learned to play football there, and most importantly, no matter if they feel German and want to represent the country.

    Just sad and pathetic.

I was talking about the present, not the past. The last FiFA U17 WC was in 2005, not last year. On August 18th, the 2007 U17 WC in South Korea starts, and the Netherlands have not even qualified for it (thanks to Germany I might add, knocking them out in the playoffs Ale).

Well, England have qualified for the U17 WC also, as can be read above. Your U21 did very well at the U21 EC also. Your youth system is probably better than most of you think.

The youth teams are definitely more exciting than the senior team, that's for sure. Wink

Results Blut remember...Wink The day England bring home some silverware it counts for little. Smile What is having an affect to Brit football is the influx of foreign players and coaches. The quality has to go up as young kids will demand like their parents more from grassroots coaching and academies. On the other side of the coin, if the system does not supply the knowhow (which I doubt because there is a $buck$ to be made) Brit football could hurt.

U-19 European Championships Empty Re: U-19 European Championships

Post by blutgraetsche Mon Jul 23, 2007 4:41 am

Results are not that important on the youth level IMHO, like I always said, but they can help, of course (e.g. financially -> good results = more money is being invested in the youth setup). More important is that the youth teams qualify for the international tournaments, so the youngsters get a feeling for big competitions like those at an early age, learn to handle pressure situations etc.

German (football) youth education was basically non existant prior to the EC 2000 disaster, the German FA relied on the huge number of young footballers on the amateur level (no other country has more people playing for a football club than Germany) who did not have any kind of professional training (by pro coaches) at all. Reforms were made (and are still made, it's a neverending process), and we see the results today.

There are quite a few similarities to England / the UK in this respect actually. The same arguments you bring up now (too many foreign players in the league, leaving no room for the homegrown youngsters etc.) were brought up back then also. The Bundesliga, which used to be one of the dominant leagues in the 1990s, got into a financial crisis after media mogul Kirch went bankrupt. You can compare him to Murdoch, albeit on a lesser scale. This financial crisis was a blessing in disguise for German football though, because it forced the clubs to improve their youth setup and give their youngsters a chance (in addition to the efforts by the German FA), simply because it was cheaper than buying established foreigners.

So should you hope that the Sky bubble bursts like it did in Germany almost a decade ago? Probably. It's not just that all the money available to EPL clubs will make them more competitive on the international market, easier for them attract foreign players who make it more difficult for your youngsters. In addition to that, it leads to inflated prices on the domestic market, especially for English talent. If young English players become too expensive, smaller clubs can not afford them, the same clubs where these youngsters could get most match practice which is essential for their development. At a big club, they will get less matches, because the competition for the starting places is much stronger.

Your post makes good sense, but I'm all for the these top players coming to the UK. The football market is massive and in North America, Asia the EPL will grow with a worldwide audience. Young local kids will be better because the market demands this. Even with the negative spread of funds through the league's homegrown players will make it because the $buck$ rules IMO to supply the demand.

Germany have taken the lead again Greece. Ben-Hatira scored the goal with a very composed finish. Germany fully deserve their lead, Greece had been quite defensive up until the goal, although they are playing more expansive football now.

    edit: 1-1 at halftime

Germany let their standards drop after the goal and Greece fought their way back into the game.

Greece take the lead. A slightly fortunate goal because the Greek player mishit the ball, but it ended up bouncing over the German keeper and into the net. Could be a bit of an upset on the cards?

edit: Penalty for Germany. Sam fouled by a Greek defender whose name I won't even attempt to spell. Awful defending, but Ben-Hatira scores from the spot (inevitably).

10 man Greece are through to the final!
