Nesta retires from Internationals Empty Nesta retires from Internationals

Post by Cesc Soler Wed Aug 01, 2007 1:42 pm

Italy defender Alessandro Nesta has announced his retirment from international football.

The 31-year-old AC Milan star, who played in the Champions League final win against Liverpool in May, want to concentrate on club commitments.

He said: "I will never join the national team again. My adventure with the Azzurri finishes here."

Nesta, who won 78 caps, was part of Italy's squad that won the World Cup in Germany in 2006.

    ===============================================

He is a great defender who I loved to watch on the International stage. His partnerships over the yeats with Cannavaro have been brillaint. I suppose this means that Materazzi will cement his position in the side from the next few years.

Whats the next generation of defenders like in Italy?

You just beat me to it Cesc.

I really think this trend of great players leaving the international scene while still in their prime (though we could debate that) is a great shame.

Surely not long-term re Materazzi though, as he's nearly 34 isn't he?

Turns 34 this month. So I would think that next Summer will be his last Tournament. I doubt he will do a Maldini.

It is a great shame to see players retire in their prime. Bergkamp retired from Internationals in 2000 but still produced some brilliant football after that for Arsenal. Maybe had he stuck around Holland would have been at South Korea and Japan in 2002. Totti has recently done it as well yet he was named as the best goalscorer in Europe this year.

Maybe they want to go out with dignity, something that David Seaman didn't really do as those mistakes towards the end of his career are still in the memory.

Do you think Bergkamp intended to retire early, or do you think his fear of flying forced the decision?

it would have taken a while to get to japan by boat if he had helped holland qualify, although they should have spiked his milk like in the A-team

    Great shame

We now have two 34 year olds at CB and our fullbacks are both on the wrong side of 30 aswell.

Barzagli i our big hope for the near future, and maybe Andreolli will get more playing time at Roma. Bonera and Bovo havnt progressed as well as i expected them to.

Nesta wants to focus on club football, as he already has won the biggest International prize. He could go for the EC, bu he doesn't need to. I guess his hunger (for international prizes) went away, and wants to focus on club football (where his bread and butter is).

but Nesta only played one game during the WC and he was really upset that he missed most of it.

My guess is that he doent want that to happen again and added to the fact that he is playing so well for Milan without the international distractions.

International matches should never be "distractions", they should be an honour for any player, no matter how big the reputation and name.

A true shame, but Italy, like any other national team, needs players who are highly motivated to play internationals.

I can't say that I like this new development down south, if you can actually call it that. I always thought that the national team had a similar highly important status in Italy like it has over here in Germany, or Brazil for instance. There is no greater goal for any Brazilian player than to play for the Selecao one day.

The difference is that you only have to be half-decent to play for germany, but really an excellent player to have any chance of even being considered for brasil Wink

Nesta has been injured a lot in the last few years and he is getting to an age where he could extend his career by cutting out the internationals. If he continued playing every match then he might not even be fit for the Euros. Seems a sensible decision.

I think the main reason for all these players retiring, is due to a couple of things. Firstly they've just won the World Cup, what a better way to finish their intnl careers with an WC medal?

Also they're into their 30's possibly their prime, but with the amount of the games likes of Nesta, Totti have to play these days, Intl games esp friendlies just fill up the calendar.

And are the highlight of the calendar, especially for people like me – I know we're in a minority on this board.

We just think it's a crying shame that one of the greatest defenders of the age is leaving the biggest stage (for whatever reasons that might indeed make sense) and won't be there next summer, along with Totti, the European Golden Boot holder. (Apart from the fact that Nesta only played one game in the WC.) I'm totally with Blut on this one...

Of course, it could be that come Euro 2008 I'll be grateful for those two absences, but that's a different matter.

I knew that someone would post a cheap shot like that, expected Pele to do it though.

Being nominated for die Mannschaft might be easier, but playing in the first XI and especially keeping your starting place is as hard.

it's a lot more difficult these days for a striker to play in the first XI for Germany than for Brazil

    same applies to goalkeeping

for some positions there might be more Brazilian competition, but the winner would ultimatively be German

And the even funnier thing is: you actually beleive this!

The Brazilian could put out 5 teams at least who could compete at the highest leve such is their depth- so many brazilians plying their trade in Europe and then back home.

Never have I met even an Englander who would dare peddle the type of hype you get away with Oscar - I ORDER you to refrain, or you may never be allowed to make a comment on the issue of "overhyping" ever again you naughty naughty swine afro <Ale>

The problem is that Dunga prefers Vagner Love over the strikers (not forwards, of course!) you mentioned, hence a striker problem.

Doesn't mean that it can't be solved rather easily though.

Pray do tell, what German strikers are there out there currently scaring the hell out of CL defences, sorry thats not fair, lets bring it down a level- UEFA Cup defences, Bundesliga defences, 2nd rate international defences?

Klose - tick, although hardly had a great campaign
Kuranyi, Podolski, Kiessling, Gomez, - sorry, none of these would currently walk into the Brazilian side, nor probably make the bench.

Do fill me in if I've forgotten anyone- Asamoah perhaps, or Odonkor (could play as a striker no?), or maybe one of the endless conveyor belt of German youth talent are good enough to play for the 5 times world champions?
