Serie A - The 2007-08 season thread Empty Serie A - The 2007-08 season thread

Post by bluenine Mon Aug 20, 2007 11:54 am

Instead of having separate threads for Inter, Juve, Milan, Fiorentina, etc, perhaps we can all discuss all the updates and happenings in one Serie A thread!

    Calcio Renaissance
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After a traumatic chapter in calcio history, all is well once more as the peninsula’s giants retake their rightful place amongst the elite. Lorenzo Zacchetti of Eurocalcio magazine looks forward to the most mouth-watering season in recent memory.

The summer is always a frustrating time for any football fan, but last year there was an even greater sense of restlessness. With Juventus, Napoli and Genoa all preparing for a Cadetti campaign, Serie A had the look of an unfinished novel and it proved to be equally unsatisfying. Now there’s a feeling of rebirth as for the first time in years the biggest sides in Italy will all be competing for the nation’s biggest prize. Indeed, not even Lega chief Antonio Matarrese’s misplaced comments that last season’s Serie B was “a script that had already been written” could spoil the party. Surely such sentiments would be less than enthusiastically received by the likes of Piacenza, Rimini and Brescia who were a whisker away from claiming play-off spots.

It is important that we spare a thought for Calciopoli’s forgotten victims. Juventus’ appearance in the second tier was a cruel handicap for less illustrious sides with top-flight aspirations. The Bianconeri were almost certain to reserve one of the automatic promotion spots, leaving the rest of the pack to compete for a single spot. However, while the expected sides did triumph in the end, it was far from smooth sailing. Juve struggled at times to adapt to playing on poor pitches against fiercely motivated sides looking to write their names in the history books and willing to break some ankles to do so. Napoli and Genoa fans were made to sweat until the final half hour of the season, when a Triestina equaliser at Piacenza opened the door for a mutually beneficial stalemate at Marassi.

Cruel as the conclusion to the campaign was for Piacenza, who fought bravely despite the loss of injured star striker Daniele Cacia, nobody can deny that Genoa and Napoli were a class above. Under the astute guidance of Gian Piero Gasperini, the Grifoni’s success was based on a formidable attack, but in truth the Rossoblu simply had too many top-class players to be denied – Adailton, Omar Milanetto, Marco Di Vaio, Domenico Criscito, Julio Cesar Leon and Mirko Gasparetti deserve top-flight football. Not only did the expected performers deliver, but there were also some surprises such as goalkeeper Fernando Rubinho’s commanding presence and Gaetano De Rosa’s eye for goal.

In the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, Edy Reja withstood the weight of expectations and led the Azzurri to a second consecutive promotion. Reja’s man-management skills were clear for all to see as he inspired the best from his men when it really mattered. The defensive, disciplined Azzurri stood in stark contrast to their Genovese rivals, but achieved the same result. While Gennaro Iezzo was like a portcullis between the posts, Paolo Cannavaro could have been mistaken for his brother. Mariano Bogliacino, Francesco Montervino, Fabio Gatti and Maurizio Domizzi proved to be shrewd signings who will surely be able to compete in Serie A, while Emanuele Calaio’ and Roberto De Zerbi were impressive. The fact that Napoli secured their return to the spotlight on the 20th anniversary of their Scudetto triumph added a further sprinkling of magic to the celebrations.

Just as Juventus, Napoli and Genoa have spent their time in Purgatory and arrived at the Promised Land, so has Serie A. For the first time since 1994-95, the top Division has its full complement of derbies and almost every side to have won a Scudetto on its fixture list. It is fair to say that the only true absentees are Verona as Pro Vercelli, Casale and Novara have been languishing in the depths for years. Almost all the biggest cities in Italy will be in the spotlight with the exception of Bologna, Bari and Venice – although the latter has never been a football hotbed. So, who will be the winners and losers in this eagerly anticipated season? Everywhere you look there are fascinating questions to be answered. Can Milan challenge Inter without a handicap to overcome? Can Juventus compete for the title? Will Lazio and Fiorentina repeat last season’s success? How will Walter Mazzarri fare at Sampdoria – a side with bigger expectations?

Can Empoli defy the odds again? Who are the real Catania – the side that flirted with the Champions League places in the first part of the season or the team that escaped the drop by the skin of their teeth? Will Udinese rediscover themselves under Pasquale Marino? The only certainty is that after a bleak period of scandal, exiled giants and low-level football, Italian soccer has a great chance to catch up with their English and Spanish counterparts and rediscover its place as one of the top Leagues in the world. Bentornato calcio.

I would prefer him to Maxwell in a 3 striker formation.... another option would be:

    -----------------Cesar
Maicon - Materazzi - Cordoba- Chivu
    ----Cambiasso - Vieira - Stankovic
    Ibra -----------Crespo-----------Suazo

Cesar was very good last season, so I guess we are keeping faith... we always have Toldo incase Cesar loses it...

Dismal summer can give way to a vintage Serie A

The big names may have headed elsewhere, but this year's Italian season promises as many high jinks and hysterics as ever.

    James Richardson

    August 23, 2007 12:01 PM

Henry, Tevez, Torres, Klose, Ribéry, Nani, Malouda; all big name players on the move this summer, and not so much as a Darren Bent coming to Serie A. Meanwhile Luca Toni, Cristiano Lucarelli, Rolando Bianchi and Giuseppe Rossi (who admittedly was only ever on loan at Parma) have all headed overseas. Viewed from the transfer market it's certainly been a dismal summer for our Italian chums, who've made fewer signings than George Dubya on a promotional book tour of Louisiana. Still, as Italy's top division prepares to unleash another season's worth of high jinks and hysterics there are plenty of reasons to consider this a potentially vintage season. And no, Ibrahim Ba's not one of them.

First off, Juventus, Genoa and Napoli are back, restoring the full set of big city derbies to the Serie A calendar for the first time in 12 years. Juve, admittedly, only popped downstairs briefly, but it's still good to see them back after a season watching Messina fill in as their understudies. Much has changed at Juve since Calciopoli; after years of lording it over everyone the Old Lady now just wants to be loved, and to that end the old board has been cleared out and Mr Simpatico himself, Claudio Ranieri, brought in to wave his tickle stick in place of the cheerless Didier Deschamps.
Happily, Juve's bid to win friends should be helped by the fact they won't seriously challenge for anything this season beyond the Coppa Italia. They're out of Europe, under-equipped to challenge for the Scudetto and their pre-season loss to, yes, Newcastle is likely to be only the first of many reality checks this season. Ranieri may have spent £40m of Uncle Fiat's money to revamp the Serie B winners, but while Buffon in goal guarantees a top-four finish almost single-handedly, the rest of the squad have either too little experience or too much. The entire back line is new, the two big midfield signings - Tiago and Sergio Almirón - keep stepping on each other's toes and up front Vincenzo "Italian for 'workmanlike'" Iaquinta is the only big name arrival. With Alessandro Del Piero another year past his sell-by date, the side's only regular goalscorer is David Trezeguet. If he goes missing, things could get really ugly.

But back to the good news, and while Inter, Milan and Roma all look significantly stronger than the club responsible for the biggest rigging scandal since 'The Good Ship Venus', the title race shouldn't be anything like as straightforward as last season. Runaway winners Inter have boosted their squad with the signings of speedy Cagliari striker David Suazo and Roma's defensive Mr Fix-it Cristian Chivu, but they have looked anything but smooth in pre-season - particularly during their Italian Super Cup defeat by Roma. And with Patrick Vieira announcing this week that he'll no longer dine next to team-mate Marco Materazzi, just how long can manager Roberto Mancini keep the lid on Inter's locker-room full of 'characters'?

Should Inter falter or self-combust, conventional wisdom has Roma down as title dark horses. The Giallorossi have been unexpectedly aggressive over the summer, replacing Chivu with Bayer Leverkusen's Juan, snapping up Barcelona's Ludovic Giuly ("the signing of the summer," according to Fabio Capello) and hanging on to the likes of Daniele De Rossi, Philippe Mexès and manager Luciano Spalletti. There's also the lightning-fast winger Mauro Esposito arriving from Cagliari and former Real Madrid right-back Cicinho too, so for the first time in years there's real depth to a Roma side that was already playing the best football in Italy at times last term. And if captain Francesco Totti can suck his thumb another 26 times this season, maybe, just maybe Roma can better last year's second-place finish.

That said, the most obvious rivals to the Nerazzurri are neighbours Milan, despite the fact their summer transfer campaign (or lack of thereof) has been as bewildering as ever. Until August the only arrivals were Kaká's little brother Digão, in from Serie B Rimini, and Ibrahim Ba, the former Milan flop rated "not good enough" by Sam Allardyce's Bolton and released by Serie C2 (fourth division) Varese earlier this summer. Of course, Milan subsequently pulled off a minor coup by signing Brazilian striking prodigy Alexandre 'Duck' Pato for £10m, but as he's only 17 and won't arrive until January they're still looking a bit thin up front (yes, even with Ronaldo). As for the rest of their ageing squad, Emerson has arrived in midfield but Dida's still looking shifty in goal, Paolo Maldini's still covering the backline with the aid of a free bus-pass and oft-trumpeted targets Samuel Eto'o and Ronaldinho are still at Barcelona. Mind you, these are the European champions, so would you bet against them?
Beyond the top four, Fiorentina's dreams of breaking back into the Champions League spots or even hitting barn doors from six paces look seriously compromised by their decision to replace Luca Toni with Christian Vieri. Happily, plenty of other clubs do approach the new season with more exciting new forward line-ups. At Palermo, watch out for back-from-injury Amauri with back-from-Benfica Fabrizio Miccoli. Livorno have brought in the lively Francesco Tavano and, curiously, one-time Spanish Next Big Thing Diego Tristán, now sadly in his post-career phase. Meanwhile up in the north-east Udinese now boast Serie A's top fancy-dan striker Fabio Quagliarella, formerly of Sampdoria.

It's Samp themselves, however, whose fans await the new season most excitedly. After years of no-nonsense rigour in the transfer market they suddenly find themselves with one of the most talented front pairings anywhere in Europe, Vincenzo Montella and Antonio Cassano. Admittedly, both have question marks attached: Montella is fragile, but when fit is a brilliantly inventive finisher; Cassano, meanwhile, is the new Maradona - at least, that's what he told Capello at Roma, shortly before sidetracking his career in a series of contract disputes and an ill-starred move to Madrid.
It's that old Messiah/naughty boy dichotomy, but among all the jokes about Spanish doughnuts it's easy to forget the impact Cassano had as an anarchic teenager at Bari and Roma; he is by far the purest Italian talent of his generation. Should Samp manage to restore him to his former glory - he's still only 25 after all - then this really would be a season to remember.

Antonio will still be too chubby to start, mind, when Samp kick off this weekend at Siena. In other opening-round matches, Roma visit Palermo, Juve host Livorno, Inter face Udinese and Genoa host Milan, a match which - in a reminder of how much the Italian game still has to resolve - is not open to travelling supporters because of the threat of violence.

    Buon campionato a tutti!

Materazzi suffered a horror injury last night, and might be out till 2008. But the operation has gone well, thank God!

I am so glad Inter bought Chivu!!

    From inter.it

    Materazzi injury operated on
    Thursday, 23 August 2007 14:24:57

PAVIA - Marco Materazzi was admitted to the orthopaedic clinic at the San Matteo hospital in Pavia during the night following the right thigh injury suffered in the final minutes of the first half of Italy's friendly against Hungary. On his arrival at the clinic run by professor Francesco Benazzo, the Inter defender underwent Doppler ultrasound, magnetic resonance and ultrasound tests. Assisted by Inter's chief of medical staff Franco Combi, the player underwent surgery late this morning to drain the diagnosed hematoma using an endoscopy, and under ultrasound control.

During the operation, which lasted approximately one hour, the hematoma was successfully removed without making large incisions. The pressure on the inside of the thigh was reduced to avoid muscular necrosis and allow the player to start rehabilitation therapy with a timeframe to be determined. Inter's medical staff wishes to thank the Italian national team's medical staff for their collaboration.

Of course. I was talking about a neutral fan.

BTW, like allways I expect a low scoring first day. A lot of 1-0 and 0-0.

Of the big 3, Serie A is the most attacking league for sometime now... even last season, Serie A had more goals in the same number of games:

    1. Serie A - 961 goals
    2. La Liga - 942 goals
    3. EPL - 931 goals

You'll be better off predicting 0-0's in EPL!!

Genoa-Milan will be a more open game tho, Genoa are known for their leaky defence and persistant attacking

Expect small genoa to attack the milanese relentlessly.

True, but that game isn't at the same time. Genoa - Milan will be better then Inter - Udinese.

Of course. I saw talking about a neutral fan.

BTW, like allways I expect a low scoring first day. A lot of 1-0 and 0-0.

Juventus returns to Serie A with victory

    August 25, 2007
TURIN, Italy (Ticker) - After a year of exile in Serie B, Juventus began its first campaign back in the top flight with a 5-1 win over Livorno on Saturday. Hat-trick hero David Trezeguet set the wheels in motion in the 26th minute and a second-half double from substitute Vincenzo Iaquinta guaranteed three points for the home side.

Trezeguet put the icing on the cake with two more goals in the last three minutes to take Juve top of the table, despite a consolation goal from Massimo Loviso in stoppage time. Earlier, Lazio and Torino had to settle for a point each in a 2-2 draw that provided an exciting opening act to the 2007-08 Italian Serie A season.

Alessandro Rosina became the first player to score in the new campaign when he gave Torino the lead after 33 minutes but Goran Pandev equalized for the Romans early in the second half. Tommaso Rocchi put Lazio ahead on the hour mark, but there was a quick reply from Torino's Tommaso Vailatti to ensure the spoils were shared even though the visitors had Gianluca Comotto sent off late on

Cruz starting upfront, with Ibra... no Suazo, interesting.

Zanetti in the midfield, Maicon-Cordoba-Samuel-Maxwell in the defence.

Hmmm... too predictable. What was a bit surprising is to see Udinese starting 3 strikers against Inter in San Siro!!

Amazing assist by Ibra, great control!

Very open attacking game so far, chances at both sides... there are more goals in this one for sure!

Inter are looking so complacent, I don't like this... taking too much time on the crosses and shots... we need more urgency, hopefully before Udinese equalise!
