Serie A 2013-14 Season Thread
Sassuolo, Verona and Livorno have been promoted. Which means, for the first time in Serie A history, there will be 5 city derbies: Milano (Internazionale and Milan), Torino (Juventus and Torino), Roma (Lazio and Roma), Genova (Genoa and Sampdoria) and Verona (Chievo and Hellas Verona).
Inter, Roma and Napoli changing coaches. Milan strengthening to mount a scudetto challenge. Lets hope this season is more exciting than the last.

Does Italian football have a playoff system for promotions or is still just the top 3 from Serie B that go up?

They do have playoffs, but if the 3rd placed team is 10 or more points ahead of 4th, they are promoted automatically

Top 2 get promoted directly, and the next 4 go into play-offs for the 3rd promotion spot. Unless the point difference between the 3rd and the 4th team is more than 10 points I think, in which case the top 3 get promoted directly (which happened when Juve were in Serie B).

Looks like Juve have got Tevez for 10m... thats a good deal, this guy is quality.
I wonder if this means that Juve are no longer interested in Jovetic and Higuain, or will they still go for one of them?

I now hear that its 9m plus 3m in bonus if Juve reach the CL semis. Fantastic deal, even taking into account his 5.5m net wages.Kroos wrote:10 million

Juve finally have a reference point in attack. They don't need Jovetic now, though Higauin would still help.

I think they needed Jovetic more than Tevez/Higuain to be honest. They need somebody like Jovetic who can link up midfield and attack, create something out of nothing and score goals.

Before the signing of Tevez, I would have agreed with you. Now, its best to spend the remaining budget elsewhere, than spend big on another creative striker / winger.

I agree but I was just saying that this deal is good relative to price but not relative the direct needs of the team although it will be an improvement having Tevez instead of Giovinco. In truth there isn't much that can be done with this Juventus team except make it stronger in depth. I'm thinking Kolarov on the left for example. If Tevez+Llorente doesn't prove dynamic enough to compensate for the missing x-factor then this deal was rather expensive for the team.bluenine wrote:Super Mourinho wrote:I think they needed Jovetic more than Tevez/Higuain to be honest. Yeah, I don't think Llorente is good enough for them, I though Higuain would have suited them more. As for improving, they still haven't worked out creativity in the midfield... too Pirlo dependent. I think Hernanes could be a great buy for them here. And instead of Kolarov, they should just recall Gabbiadini for the left flank, a more attacking back up option for Asamoah.
Apart from that, they probably need a top CB - a bit light there for a 3 man defense. Unless Conte wants to start playing with a back 4 next season.

I am unimpressed by kolarov, good for freekicks, average at best for everything else. I think there just aren't enough left-footed players in the world.

I wouldn't judge Llorente so soon. 1-2 years ago big clubs were battling for him but this season he has declined quite a bit after falling out with Bielsa but his unique mix of technique, physique and pace is still there. The question is if he has stagnated. If not then Juve has pulled off a big coup because Llorente could function as a great focus in the team outside of Pirlo which gives them a great option because Llorente is hard to contain even for the most physical defenders out there. If Conte gets him going and they provide service from the flanks I think he could become a star striker again but I'm unsure what condition he arrives in.
110%
I'm of mixed feelings with regard to Kolarov but he strikes me as more suited for the 3-5-2 than in a backline. He could have a productive partnership with Llorente given Kolarov's ability with the cross. However I think Asamoah has done a good job for them so far so a bit harsh to buy Kolarov
Murray
I think Juve's defence has been solid but nothing compared to the old days of Cannavaro-Thuram. Neither Bonucci, Barzagli or Chiellini strike me as belonging in the top 5 Cb's with Chiellini edging it. Together they work well though but would like them to buy a world class player there. With regards to 4-back or 3-back I think Juve has had edge if they can switch between the two when needed both before games and during games.

Re: Serie A 2013-14 Season Thread
If I have to take a shot at the Juve starting line up for 2013-14, its gonna be:
*I have put Ogbonna ahead of Bonucci only because he is of similar quality, and this shows more strength in depth. Bonucci, due to his understanding of the system, will probably start more often.
Key Subs: Caceras, Bonucci, Marrone, Peluso, Pogba, De Ceglie, Pepe, Giacherrini, Giovinco, Vucinic, Matri
Probably let go: Anelka, Bendtner, Quagliarella, Isla
Its a pretty strong line up, as they have strengthened in their area of weakness last season (strikers). The main problem I see is that there is no Pirlo replacement. Pogba & Marrone can stand in for Vidal or Marchisio, but neither can replace Pirlo. Juve need another regista. But I don't see them linked to any. So I guess they plan to change shape when Pirlo is not playing, and thats where a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-1-2 becomes useful.

In June 2013, the Italian press agency ANSA reported, that the office of public prosecution in Palermo has started investigations against Miccoli, for alledged extortion. According to the Attorney in Palermo, Miccoli had commissioned Mauro Lauricella, the son of a Sicilian mafioso, Antonio Lauricella, to retrieve money owed to him by a nightclub. During a taped phone conversation, Miccoli was quoted calling the slain anti-mafia judge Giovanni Falcone "fango", or dirt.
Also - i know they are Serie B but Kyle Lafferty signed for Palermo !

Firenze is crazy for Fiorentina, they have a very romantic and passionate following, despite (or maybe because of) the many up and downs and burning delusions in their history.
After some years of lack of care from the owners, they orgasmed last season for the football quality the team immediately produced, somewhat unexpectedly, after a big renovation.
Then they had the cold shower of failing CL qualification in the last five mins of the season, and now they just can't believe that Della Valle bros are willing to invest and bring in what is such a high profile signing for them despite missing on the CL money.
Enthusiasm is cranked at eleven, if Gomez can adapt fast to the new league and keep on with his Bayern's goalscoring ratio, he's gonna be a local legend before christmas

Before you start promising Kroos a Gomez statue where Batistuta's once stood, Gomez for Jovetic is a step down for la Viola. Fiorentina have seen a lot of top stars in the last 30 years, Gomez has big shoes to fill.

Well, sure in terms of flair and potential, not so sure in terms of impact and end product.
Jovetic is a massive talent, he was naturally at the center of the gameplay, and it's a pity that la Viola hasn't got the critical mass to retain a player like him.
But... we've seen last season that consistent finishing was in short supply, while build-up and creativity definitely weren't.
Missing Jovetic will impact this somehow, but they've solid teamplay, classy midfielders, powerful wingbacks to make up for his contribution. Plus the additions of Rossi, Joaquin and Ilicic, and the expected further growth of Ljacic.
Jovetic, like most players of his kind, had long pauses during last season, but the overall performance of the team didn't seem to suffer much because of that. What they did miss through all the season was a top level finisher to better capitalize on their dominance when they were at the top of their game and to ease things off when they weren't.
Yay Fiorentina are not parvenus, they've a long history of hovering near the top level, they've had their fair share of great talents and they're very proud of it.bluenine wrote:Fiorentina have seen a lot of top stars in the last 30 years, Gomez has big shoes to fill.
Still, in the last 25 years, how many pure strikers at a level comparable or superior to Gomez have they seen?
Batistuta for a decade, Chiesa for 3 seasons, Toni for 2... the list pretty much ends here.
You've also to consider the dynamics of the signing.
Most of the top talents Fiorentina enjoyed were recruited as youngsters, or relatively unknown, or after a dip in their career.
Very rarely they've been able to bring home an expensive player at the top of his game from a high profile club.
The closest thing in recent years, in terms of momentum and pricetag, was Toni, and still he came from a season in Serie B and from a seller club like Palermo.
Psychologically, this is a very important signing for the Fiorentina fans.
I mean, their Juventus arch-rivals are in full renaissance, back to back champions, yet again the richest and most influential club in Serie A... Yet they've been babbling about a "top player" signing in attack for three years, and all they got in the end was renegades Tevez and Llorente nearing their 30s.
While Fiorentina almost out of nowhere were able to sign the 26 yo most profilic striker of the european champions.
If Gomez will be able to fulfill the expectations and total in the region of 20+ goals, he will quickly become a symbol for them.
And Fiorentina has a penchant for symbols. Last year they opened a hall of fame in their museum. You know who was the only player younger than Antognoni that they felt to include? Not Baggio, not Bati, not Rui, no Toni... but Christian Riganò, the lowly leagues suburban striker that lifted them from C2 back to Serie A when they were demoted for bankruptcy in the early 2000s.

i don`t know what you see in Jovetic, his stats look average at best
i know you see in him baggio, but come on, nice touches don`t make a good footballer
gomez will have a far bigger impact then this kid will ever make in world football
sure in terms of flair and potential, not so sure in terms of impact and end product. this
you dont know the real potential from gomez blue, playing for bayern is like playing against a wall, now for fiorentina he will have more space, because fiorentina is not huge favourite in every game, the opponent won`t hide, and they are not a possession side, i expect 25+ goals in every season
