The signs and precendent are all there...

After a fantastic first season for Barcelona, people were proclaiming him to be the hottest talent in World football and after a reasonable WC the hype appeared as though it may have been justified.

But now he heads into his difficult 2nd season.

People are now aware of what he can do and will play to nullify this.

Will he suffer the infamous SSS or will he continue to progress towards greatness?

nah i think the kid is just too goddamn good... he will be marked more closely and game plans will be more developed to nullify him than they were last season but if barca get on top of teams then he along with ronny and eto are practically unstoppable.... he just has too much skill and pace

Rooney is still due a bad season.

Rooneys goalscoring stats are a statisticians dream!

Well I can't think of too many players that were being touted as WC after one season so I think 'great' is the correct word

I think it will depend on the form of his team; if barca are in form , he will find it easier to do well but if the team isn't doing well and is expected to change things for them , he will find it difficult because as someone pointed above he isn't a surprise anyymore, teams will certainly look for ways to stop him and it will be much easier doing that when his team is playing bad.

the touting wasn´t based solely on the season though tweeds there was already an expectancy level well in excess of even what rooney had to face. this kid is going to prove you v wrong imho, he will be in contention for WPotY on a regular basis in a few years i´m less convinced at this moment in time rooney will be. and your rooney without his temperament comment elsewhere is just dreamworld the fact is he has a problem and needs to get it sorted otherwise it will severely hinder hsi progress the italians and spanish will be v good at winding him up and getting him to lose his temper, he´s no fooking good to them on the touch line

    haha!

Rooney has been steadily improving for four years now without signs of stopping his progress.

Messi has had half a decent season! And a lot of what he does relies on acceleration - something he'll lose as he gets older - acceleration is one of the hardest physical attributes to keep hold of, esp as he doesn't rely on muscular power to achieve it

Have you seen his thighs?? His legs are pure power, and as for his special attribute then it is more a case of a magnificent touch that allows him to dribble with the ball almost glued to his feet.

They both are great talents, but to me Messi looks a bit more talented than Rooney... Messi is spectacular, he is Ronaldniho's heir... of course, this season will probably give us the best idea whether he can live up to the expectations...

at a speed rooney could only dream of, i´m sure as he gets older and perhaps loses a little pace his game will have developed such that it wont be so important as your making out, tweeds your seriously doing this kid down

    Messi isn't over-rated.

He has the best defense in the world looking like school boys in the CL.

Dominated RM for 60 Minutes (he should have gotten the standing ovation)

Score in the World cup and had an assist. After coming back for and injury (so don't use that has and excuse for Rooney)

    He has also won everything.

    CL
    League Championship
U-20 world cup (top scorer and best player) is an important competition very-where except England, and that’s because they aren't good enough to Qualify. Razz

What had Rooney done, score some goals and some impressive performances against mediocre opposition.

But football isn't all about stats.

So I shall say Messi is better that Rooney in every department of his game, except for his long shoot

And the Topper is, in a team full of stars last season his was the 2nd brightest. don't see rooney being able to out shine the players that are in Barca's team

    meh....

Messi and Rooney are IMO on the same level - far above any other players their age - even Ronaldo who I consider inferior due to his lack of teamwork and vision.

I just don't get this whole Messi is way better than Rooney malarky when in fact everything that football is based on suggests otherwise

we can discuss the now all day and not agree but what i think nearly everybody sees is that messi has such massive potential yes still to be realised but that potential imho is in excess of rooney hence people talking a lot about him, i also think his attitude is massively in his favour feet on the ground able to cope with whatever is thrown at him and get come carry on and come back for more not lash out when things aren´t going well he channels his frustrations in the right direction

@ tweedle... when rooney burst onto the scene he looked like a superstar instantly.... everything he did was brilliant...however and its just my view i think rooney has actually stalled and in fact went backwards in many people's views....i thought he was destined to be one of the very best... now i would be very surprised if he ever fulfills the potential we once saw... the turth is on the big occasions he is usualy found wanting... where was he for man u in the CL last year... where was he for england in the WC (whole campaign)... to be considered in the special bracket you simply cannot have so many poor games

since messi hasn't been around as long we are just getting used to his talent.. he has been more consistently brilliant and produced more than rooney already IMO... id much rather watch him than rooney... maybe when we get more used to him like rooney people will start to backtrack in their opinions on him but i highly doubt it

    messi >>>>>> rooney Wink

    @ messiah

    You said:

    -----------------------------------

The thing is that Messi recovered from his injury mid-may. Rooney didn't recover until Mid-June - so your point is in fact pointless.

    @ COTR

    You're talking shit! Wink

I've just given you the stats that prove so - he may not have become faster or a better dribbler but he has become a more effective footballer

People talk more about messi than ronney because of two reasons:

    1. he is from argentina
    2. he plays for barca.

He might be more talented than rooney but i don't think he is better than him presentlty. We haven't seen what messi is actually made of yet because he went to a barca side that's doing well, the same can be said about argentina team and the big question is; would he have had the same impact in a team in transition( like manu) as he had in the barca team?

    Agendas Tweedle, Agendas.

Saying Rooney has improved, wouldn't fit into Sheep's statements that Fergie has made Rooney and Ronaldo worse players.

Also his stats points is quite funny considering how he goes on about Crouch's stats. Rolling Eyes
