Re: Euro 2008 Draw thread
I hereby baptise Group C "The Catennaccio Group".
Italians never had the guts to play attacking despite usually having the better team, French Ligue 1 is the most defensive league in the world & Holland never scored less goals a match (and conceded less) than with Marco in charge. Pity the attack minded Romanians will spoil this group with attacking footy.
Holland - Italy 0-0
France - Romania 0-1 (Dica)
Italy - Romania 0-1 (Goian header)
Holland - France 0-0
Italy - France 0-0
Holland - Romania 0-5 (Dica 3, Niculae, Goian)
Romania 3-9 +7
Italy 3-2 -1 (after drawing lots)
France 3-2 -1
Holland 3-2 -5

Who planned the knock out stages? Surely the best case Scenario for a tournament hosted by two teams is for them both to meet in the final, yet this is impossible.

i don't really like the way they effectively split the tournament in 2, i.e. there's basically 2 sets of 8 teams and the winners amongst them meet in the final. it should be a vs b and c vs d in the qf but the semis should mix up the groups, so anyone could meet at that stage

Romania didn't play on the attack this qualification.... They learnt from the former qualification where they were playing on the attack but lost against a superb counter-attacking Dutch team!

Romania are underrated at the moment.West Ham Snowman wrote:@DD-Romania will be tougher opponents for you than the other two...trust me.
We've played against them during the qualification and they are on par with Croatia.
France are notorious slowstarters in tournies (they only start playing well in the final game of group stages), so if they slip up they're out.
Italy are too cyinal and they can always 'create' goals .
I reckon Netherlands and Italy go through: who's first and second I don't know. If we slip up its because of the shitness of Van Basten. We are so unbelievably $h!t during his tenure that I cannot bear it anymore. As if our team is sabotaged - $h!t selections, Ajax dross, $h!t tactics, sheer bias, and Van basten only acts on his ego and not to the benefit of the team.
The Dutch FA are yet again talking about extending his contract.

I love your Germanised chip on your shoulder to take everything serious what the Dutch say...
The Dutch crowd is always too confident to think we can win the tourney and..... When the tourney starts we always play some great games.... After that the whole world is praising our style... And.... because of that we get so confident we lose grip... then..... we turn into chaos... and lose dramatically...
That's our fate...usually...
But....this time it is different because everyone is in a negative mood (just like the Germans were before their World Cup) I am very glad with that because things can only get better!

Yes you have. You should normally go far. Still don't be too confident because Switzerland at home won't be a pleasure, and the Czech are not too bad too. If Portugal play as it usually do they'll be first of the group then you might face Sweden or Greece (and take your revenge).

If we show Euro 2000 form instead of Euro 2004 form we could go far because if truth be told our so golden generation played the best football at that tournament.
we even out played France in long periods in that epic Semi Final in Belgium.
our sequence since 96 reads :quarter final, semi final, runners up
