Mexico's Castillo to go on loan to Manchester City

MEXICO CITY, Dec 14 (Reuters) - Mexican forward Nery Castillo is to go on loan to English Premier League side Manchester City after a failed attempt to adapt at Ukraine's Shakhtar Donetsk, his agent said.
Castillo, who shone in this year's Copa America with a brilliant goal against Brazil, moved from Greek club Olympiakos Piraeus to Shakhtar in July for a reported 20 million euros ($28.9 million).
He failed to impress at Shakhtar, however, and played only a handful of games, starting mostly on the bench and occasionally being left out of the squad.
Manchester City, sixth in the English top flight and coached by former England manager Sven Goran Eriksson, had expressed interest in Castillo when he made it known he wanted to leave Olympiakos.
"There has been an agreement with Manchester City so that Nery can be with the club for one year on loan and so he can prove himself, so he can play active football," his agent, Jose Luis Padilla, told Mexican television.
"Nery just wanted to play and that was not happening at Shakhtar," Padilla said. "Nery is now in England to iron out in the next few hours the final details of his contract."
Padilla said Manchester City would have an option to buy Castillo at the end of the loan period. (Reporting by Carlos Calvo, Writing by Chris Aspin, Editing by Clare Fallon)

I dont want to get too carried away until we confirm it but there have been loads of rumours on other sites all day. He would be a brilliant signing for us cos he is a top quality player.

Good signing, excellent player when on form and a big game player too. Very impressive for the Mexicans in the Copa America.

Would be an incredible coup for City, and a mark of how ambitious Sven/Shinawatra are. He's the sort of player who could easily be playing for a top four Premiership team, which is where City must be looking to go.

Goater, if you could choose two from Castillo, Alves, Anelka and Adriano, who would you go for?

Personally, now that Elano is adopting more advanced roles than he did previously I'd be worried that Castillo might be stepping on his toes a bit.

Personally, I don't think you could do much better than Alves and Anelka.

Havimg said that though Castillo would be a fantastic signing and would add some real pace and energy to your attack + some much needed unpredictability.

Well i think we will play Castillo on the right wing behind the striker so i expect us to still go for Anelka, Sven said as much yesterday. I dont think hewill step on his toes...Petrov doesnt so i dont think he will.

Nery Castillo joins on year-long loan

Manchester City can today reveal that a deal has been agreed to take Mexican star Nery Castillo on a year-long loan from Shakhtar Donetsk.

With the Ukrainian season now finished, the pacy 23-year-old was given permission to speak to City and the forward swiftly agreed to the move.

Shakhtar beat off a host of clubs from around Europe to capture him in a £15m deal in the summer from Olympiacos. City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson will see this signing as an important addition of quality to bolster his squad in the New Year.

His final season in Greece (2006/07) saw him bag 12 goals in 25 appearances, including three goals in six Champions League games. His four goals helped Mexico to the semi finals of last summer's Copa America.

City Chief Executive Alistair Mackintosh said: “Nery Castillo’s desire to make this deal happen has been extraordinary.

“He has made a significant financial contribution in order to complete this move by paying most of the loan fee himself. This proves how much he wants to play for Manchester City in the Premier League.

“We are excited and delighted that another young established international has joined the Football Club.”

The former Donetsk flyer will be eligible to play for the Blues from January and will wear the number 30 shirt.

Great great signing, it was clear that Sven wanted him last summer as well.

As for him and Elano (and perhaps petrov) walking on each others toes, its unlikely. Even if all 3 of them play together, Castillo is likely to play support striker or wide striker. Most importantly, this also gives City a back-up for Elano, which was a huge concern.

Sgoater, you think Sven will move for a top DM now? And perhaps a top striker?

That's not really bad news. He's good when he wants to be, but personally I think he lacks the personailty to really drive his ability forward and become the player he could become.

It now allows Man City to concentrate on getting Anelka or Alves, bith of whom I think are better anyhow.

Two things are obvious when it comes to Adriano, hes incredbly talented, he can also be incredibly demotivated.

I think a manager like Harry Redknapp would bring the best out of him, not sure whether Sven has the same ability to extract the best out of a demotivated player.

Anelka would be ideal next to Bianchi with Elano roaming behind IMO.

    *And Castillo

Ideally they'd get both Alves AND Anelka, although that would be an incredibly attacking lineup.

I'd imagine that Eriksson would want to switch to a more typical 4-5-1/4-3-3 with Castillo and Petrov as the support strikers and Elano as the AM, with either Alves or Anelka up front - its diffficult to know what he'll go for though. Anelka is very pacy and rather selfish, whereas Alves isn't very pacy, but links up play much better, whilst being equally deadly at scoring.

I think Anelka is the smart purchase, because of his proven premiership track record, but i am eager to see more of Alves, his goal scoring record in Holland is phenomenal...

I expect us to go for Anelka, Sven has already dropped a few hints that he will. IMO he would be perfect and really strengthen our attacking options.

With the likes of Bianchi, Bojinov, Castillo, Elano, Petrov, Ireland and Geovanni alreready on our books if we can add Anelka we will have amazing attacking options.

Plus we have done great business when you consider that the 7 player above have cost us just just under £30m....id pay that amount for just Castillo and Elano alone. <Ale>
