Gazza - if only he had been an inch taller Doh

Was indeed a great penalty shoot out. Typical German efficiency when it mattered. And some typical German haircuts to match Wink

Bayern v Valencia in 2001 and Germany v England at Italia 90 were my most important penalty shoot-out experiences. The Euro 96 one was a distant third or possibly fourth behind the Argentina game in 2006.

Has anyone got a video of the '90 shootout? Or indeed that Bayern one?

I have to say I totally agree with Toni, this was as good as it gets with the sheer quality of the penalties on top of the drama. Usually most penalties are scored, some luckily or because the keeper "guesses" the wrong way, and for instance penalties simply blasted down the middle are scored – but here you can't blame either of the keepers.

Reuter's is the weakest – maybe Jens would have saved it. It's rare that both teams have such quality penalty-takers down to No.5.

86 Brazil vs France. Zico misses, after missing a penalty during the match. Platini misses as well IIRC. Socrates does the wait.. Bats does not dive, and the Brazil captain dinks the ball tamely on Bats's arms.

    What a match! What a tie-breaker!

I don't get why a) Gazza's celebration should need to be copied b) German's seem to take offence to Gazza's celebration.

Anyone who's ever watched Gazza knows his celebrations are always like that.

For Moller to mock him at the time seemed unneccesary.

it was a shame. normally, if you score all five, you win, but it wasn't to be that day. germany had the edge.

comparing those penalties with say world cup 06 and there's a world of difference in the confidence of the england players. in 96 all looked like they believed, while none of them did in 06 (except hargreaves).

also run-ups seem to have got shorter. most of the ones in 96 were starting well outside the box. strange

I think you're missing the point, Ricardo. It's only since then that England have cemented their reputation for being incomparably useless at penalties. This side had just beaten Spain on penalties (missing none) and if you watch the video you'll see that all their five attempts were superb before you get to Southgate.

Whereas even last year, there were plenty of poor efforts amid some seriously improved penalty-taking from both the English and the Dutch youngsters (enough these days to put their respective senior sides to shame, you might think)...

    It hurts.....but it's true Sad

All in all I'd say the Dutch have done worse in penalty shoot-outs than the English, it's just that our *only* successes have been our most recent shoot-outs.....so we allude ourselves that the beast has been put to sleep Suspect

After the Holland - Italia penalty madness of 2000 there was a joke going round : You know how in street football it's impossible to take corners ? We often played with the rule "three corners equals a penalty" when we were kids. Well after the fiasco word got out that the Dutch FA had put in a demand at UEFA that they could do the same with penalties : wouldn't it be possible to exchange three penalties for one corner Wink
