Its not as simple to answer as that. Because the squad is so far behind, it'll probably take a new manager, plus some time and a lot of help from the owners in terms of spending.

I don't believe the squad is that far behind, I think they need to realise their potential, if you look at Arsenal at the end of last season people were saying they were miles away from winning the league again now look at them this season

Flamini, Hleb and Adeboyor are a million miles from where they were last season, granted. Which players in your squad can you see making an improvement like that though?

That's exactly the point, no one could envisage those 3 turning out as they have this season. What if Lucas, Babel and Kuyt all did it next season? (very unlikely but with the right coaching it could happen)

You're right Parky we do still need investment into the squad, but only for a few players in specific positions, granted the quality we need will cost. But i don't agree that our squad is a million miles away.

A lot of the points difference this season i think can be put on the doorstep of the manager, to smash Derby 6-0, then go and make wholesome changes to the squad for me is just bizarre, we had a really optimistic start, then dropped points by not fielding our strongest team - only the manager can take the blame for this IMO.

    Biggrin

We are defensively strong enough in squad terms

We have more than enough talent in central midfield

This means we are only really two or three astute signings away from having a good enough squad

And before you come out with the 'heard it all before nonsense', torres has clearly been a massive success as one of rafa's two major money signings so if he adds another torres to the mix in both attack and wide midfield we won't be 'so far' behind anyone as you well know

If Liverpool were to sign a top class winger and a good technically astute support forward, they'd be in with a very good chance.

They still lack a really classy wideman though - they have for two years but Benitez seems reluctant to address it.

IMO Lippi would be a very decent move - his teams play the right type of football + he's been there and done it and has a wealth of experience

    The main problem is

    Alves , Simao, Malouda, Babel

It's easy to blame rafa but it's clear babel was never his first choice.

When given the money he wanted for a striker he signed a brilliant one

His biggest mistake has been kuyt instead of berbatov

I wouldn't say that was his 'biggest' mistake, it was ultimately just one of many for Benitez, he does so much good work, but lets himself down with some surprising decisions, Kuyt instead of Berbatov is just one.

No manager is perfect, they are all human and make mistakes, but it is the ability to learn from mistakes which makes good managers better managers, i'm still in two minds whether he is able to learn, Paco leaving is just one reason i don't think he is a good listener, an old footballing colleague and freind ousted because he obviously didn't agree with Benitez on some issue, i certainly wouldn't have let a freind walk away after proving what a good working partnership they forged.
