Mario Balotelli was called up for the recent African Cup of Nations by Ghana, but was excused. I think he ws also in the Ghana squad for the match against Senegal - friendly in London last year. Not sure if he has actually played for Black Stars yet. If he hasn't can Italy still claim him?

Can he do that if he was part of a Ghana squad, but didn't actually play?

He was not a part of it. Ghana had called him up twice, both times he declined. He wants to play for Italy as he is born and brought up there.... and looking at his talent, he will probably make the team in a few years.

Okay how long do you think it will take for himto break through into Italian team? Does he play in Italy's youth teams yet?

He hasn't got Italian citizenship I believe, and you don't get that until your 18.
There was a great article about him somewhere I read, about what happened to him and how he was raised up.

He turns 18 this August, after which he will be eligible to play for the U19s... most likley he will straightaway be promoted to the U21s, to form a partnership with Acquafresca-Giovinco-Rossi. Pity he can't play the Euro U21 this summer.

There isn't a Euro U21 championship this year.

How come he doesn't automatically get citizenship as he was born in Palermo? Were his parents illegal immigrants? Would have thought that he would get citizenship easily if only to prevent others from capping him first.

You are right, its in 2009. Great, I bet that Balotelli will be a part of that squad if Italy qualify, even tho he may miss all the qualifiers. The strikers will probably be Acquafresca, Rossi, Balotelli, & Pozzi/Russotto. Nice.
