Amusingly, i'm pretty sure Ronaldo would have got into these sides when he first came to England.

Just because he has developed more affective ways to use his talent, doesnt mean his skill has decreased.

people on this board are so proud of themselves being able to see through the pundits and media bullshit but half the people on here rate Rio Ferdinand as being good on the ball and could play in midfield. It's a myth.

    ------------------------Reina---------------------

    -Belletti-----Ferdinand-----King-----Evra

    Ronaldo----Scholes---Fabregas---Hleb--

    -------------Berbatov---RVP------------

Ronaldo is skillfull, his just more greedy and has more of a eye for goal than before. He has pace, so why not use a attribute that scares most defenders in the world? To use pace and still have control of the ball and awareness to finish and cross, is a major skill that is under-valued here alot...

I am really confused by the definition of skill here?

What is it touch, control, passing ability, awareness? All of these are part of my definition. Being in control of a ball at pace is far more impressive than at walking pace. My 2 year old niece could eventually get the ball where she wants given enough time.

I think Rio is the best defender in England but Terry passes better than Rio.

You know I don't rate Rio as a passer but his skill is still very high. Being better on the ball and having skill is different. Being good on the ball requires great composure, confidence and technique as much as skill.

For me the easiest way to assess skill is te players short dribbling. It's why I don't get why Scholes is in the list even Carrick and Gilberto are better at short deibbling than Scholes and that's got nothing to do with physical attibutes.

No one in teh Prem can chip the ball or put spin on it like Scholes can - that's amuch a test of skill as dribbling.

Close control/dribbling and ball manipulation are best tests for me.

With regards to the ronaldo thing:

You can get big people who are very skillful (Zidane, Berbatov) and you can get quick people who are skillful (Ribery, Robinho) but you'll find few who are big, quick and skillful - this is because the best skills (in life as well as football) are developed out of necessity.

I'll give you that, but I would reguard that as technique rather than skill. And Emre can put spin on the ball as good if not better than Scholes.

Close control/dribbling and ball manipulation are best tests for me.
That's true and for me short dribbling the easiest way to judge that. You need close control and good ball manipulation to be able to dribble at short distances crowded by opposition players, so, when has Scholes aver done that? I can't see why you think Scholes is that skillful at all. Great technique - yes. Great Skill - never.

Anyhow there are four players who are very even right at the top - Hleb, Van Persie, Berbatov and Kalou. I would say Berbatov is the weakest because he's the weakest dribbler but then he has the best touch.

He scored a wonderful dribbled goal in the CL against Juve a few years back.

More than Hleb's done. But of course, Hleb plays for (profoundly unlucky to have referees conspiring against them) Arsenal.

Rio's a great defender but he is not one of the most skillfull CBs around. In fact, there aren't too many CBs who you would deem skillfull.

Huddlestone's not a CB, but I thought you'd try to find a place for him.
