Post by bluenine Tue Apr 15, 2008 10:04 pm

    So Otto, whats the verdict??

While most of you said that Klose will overshadow the Luca "Il Bomber" Toni and score more goals, the stats tell a different story...

    Toni - 18 goals in 26 games
    Klose - 10 goals in 25 games

And apart from being the leading scorer in Bundesliga, Toni is also topping the scoring charts at UEFA Cup with 10 goals already!!!

Not a bad first season, eh?

(No disrespect in the comparison with Klose... IMO Klose is one of the top strikers in europe too)

Lets just laugh at Galliani, who when offered Toni's services remarked that he would be very embarassed to see Toni wear the rossoneri shirt coz he isn't of that class. So who is embarassed now, Galliani?

Rant on about Makaay and Klose/Toni being the reason one of the others isn't soing well etc...

I've seen comments saying Toni is the same as an Inzaghi/RVN FFS Doh.

Toni has been impressive in his first Bundesliga season (he has scored around 30 goals in all competitions), and if he continues to score in the last remaining matches, he most probably will win the best player of the year award, beating both Ribery and Diego.

Despite the usual ...Schwachsinn being written in this thread, scoring in the Bundesliga has never been 'easy'. Topscorers of the year have always scored considerably less league goals than in other leagues, Gerd Müller the only (eternal) exception, and it's not just because of those 4 matches less played (18 teams vs. 20 teams in the other big leagues).

Toni has been well worth the high wages Bayern pay him.

    Less competition.

Did not mean that they are similar - clearly they have very different characteristics, just that these are strikers I don't like irrespective of their good goalscoring records.

IMO, Makaay's comparison should be with Klose (like-2-like), not with Toni. And yes, IMO Klose is a better striker.

" While the initial excitement had been all about Franck Ribéry's anarchistic runs and maverick tricks, in recent weeks it has been Toni who kept Bayern on course for the treble this season. His strike partners - Klose, who has scored a solitary league goal since September, and the inconsistent Lukas Podolski - have been demoted to the supporting cast in the great Luca show"

How ironic that Otto should be on the English League board asking where it all went wrong for Wayne Rooney, yet here is the player who - a year ago- he was deeming "the best striker in the World" has scored just 1 league goal since September.

Surely this is more of a worry then ZEROoney's season so far?!

What I like about the Luca Toni story is that not all great players have to be pulling up trees in their teens.

Exactly. Though he is not really a late bloomer, the talent was always there for everyone to see. I remember a huge debate at interlist in 2001 on Luca Toni, the 24 yr old strike partner of Roberto Baggio at Brescia. Many of us even at that time (myself included) were convinced that he is a compete package, and wanted Inter to sign him as the 4th striker (wish Inter had!!!). For me Toni is extra special coz he represents one of the occasions where I personally thought an unknown under rated player could become world class, and he did. After Brescia, he joined a small Serie B side called Palermo and the rest, like they say, is history.

He still holds the record for the highest ever season tally in Serie A (30 goals) and also the record for the highest season tally in Serie A in the last 50 years (31 goals). Thats bloody impressive.

50 goals in 80 games for Palermo
47 goals in 67 games for Fiorentina
33 goals in 40 games for Bayern

Its been a windfall of consistency in 5 seasons that we rarely see in europe these days.

Can Toni break Gred Muller's all time record??

Toni is at 35 goals this season... 6 more needed to break the all time record, and he has 8 games left this season... it very tough, but possible considering the form he is in. If Toni hadn't been injured earlier this season, he might already have broken this record...

What an excellent achievement it will be for his first season at Bayern!!

    Toni wins Muller backing
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Legendary German striker Gerd Muller believes Luca Toni can beat his record and score more than 40 goals in a single season. Toni, who moved to Bayern Munich from Fiorentina last summer, has already struck 35 times in 2007-08, netting 20 in the Bundesliga, 10 in the UEFA Cup and five in the German Cup. “Luca is very strong,” said the World Cup winner. “He has already scored 35 goals and is the only person that can surpass my achievement.” Muller rifled in 40 goals in 1971-72 between League and Cup.

“We have a different style,” said the original fox-in-the-box. “He has an extraordinary instinct.” Toni has been among the world’s best centre-forwards in recent years. The 30-year-old won the European Golden Boot award after scoring 31 goals in 2006.

“I don’t know if he will succeed in beating my tally,” smirked Muller. “But if Toni doesn’t do it this season, I fear no-one ever will.” Bayern are in the semi-final of the UEFA Cup and still have five games left in the League, giving Toni plenty of opportunities to overtake Germany’s all-time top scorer.

This article is slightly inaccurate. Gerd Müller scored 40 league goals in one season (1971-1972), and I can't see Toni (or anyone else) breaking that record anytime soon, if ever.

Müller was topscorer of the Bundesliga 7 times (just league goals):

1966/67: 28 goals (together with Emmerich)
    1968/69: 30 goals
    1969/70: 38 goals
    1971/72: 40 goals (record)
    1972/73: 36 goals
1973/74: 30 goals (together with Heynckes)
1977/78: 24 goals (together with Dieter Müller)

    http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_der_Torsch%C3%BCtzenk%C3%B6nige_der_Fu%C3%9Fball-Bundesliga

    All time topscorers:

1.) Gerd Müller: 365 goals in 427 matches, 0,85 goals per game
2.) Klaus Fischer: 268 goals in 535 matches, 0,50 goals per game
3.) Jupp Heynckes: 220 goals in 369 matches, 0,60 goals per game

    http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_der_erfolgreichsten_Torsch%C3%BCtzen_der_Fu%C3%9Fball-Bundesliga

Toni already broke the record of scoring most goals in his first season at Bayern. No striker, including Müller (who started his career there at a much younger age though), ever scored more for them in his first season. His goal scoring instinct, positioning and anticipation is the best I've ever seen since Gerd Müller.

Is it possible that Muller himself does not know his own record? scratch Coz the article seems to quote Muller. Perhaps he did not score any goals in the cup or europe that season?

Müller was topscorer of the Bundesliga 7 times (just league goals):

1966/67: 28 goals (together with Emmerich)
    1968/69: 30 goals
    1969/70: 38 goals
    1971/72: 40 goals (record)
    1972/73: 36 goals
1973/74: 30 goals (together with Heynckes)
1977/78: 24 goals (together with Dieter Müller)

    All time topscorers:

1.) Gerd Müller: 365 goals in 427 matches, 0,85 goals per game
2.) Klaus Fischer: 268 goals in 535 matches, 0,50 goals per game
3.) Jupp Heynckes: 220 goals in 369 matches, 0,60 goals per game

Toni already broke the record of scoring most goals in his first season at Bayern. No striker, including Müller (who started his career there at a much younger age though), ever scored more for them in his first season. His goal scoring instinct, positioning and anticipation is the best I've ever seen since Gerd Müller.

Still, 40 goals in about 45-50 games (in three competitions) wouldn't be the same as 40 goals in 34 games (in one competition). Müller's is a record that won't be broken.

Anyway, it shouldn't be about the records. Toni is playing a magnificent season by all standards. Hope he'll be able to deal with the press next year once he goes scoreless for three straight.

Good point. The Munich press in particular is awfully fickle, Bayern fans are even worse. But knowing him, he'll probably won't be too bothered. He always seems to smile, and looks to be mentally stable, unlike Klose, for example, who is much more sensitive.
