Players that I have truly loved:

    Daniel Amokachi

    Marc-Vivien Foé

    Zinedine Zidane(was my 1st)

    Patrick Vieira

    Robert Pires

And the one that tops them all is:

    Agooner,

Got any pictures of Henry actually playing football, or just ones of him diving and pulling odd facial expressions?

Beautiful footballer? If you call only being effective in one team, on one part of the pitch, and repeatedly diving on the biggest stage beautiful then I suppose so...

He was good for france as well, so that's 2 teams Wink

and it was his face clutching against puyol that was the problem. There might be a few dives out there but on the biggest stage only the puyol one comes to mind, so the "repeatedly diving on the biggest stage" is not exactly correct Wink

I guess while I'm at it, he was good in the box, and on the left up front. Hell he was so good he could take the ball in his own half and run half the length of the pitch and then score. That's quite a few areas of the pitch Wink.

Anyway not to get into a another henry debate here, but the thread is about favourite footballers, you named le tissier, and no one said fat, unambitious etc. You should just accept that people have their favourites for whatever reason it is. The thread isn't "name your favourite footballer so everyone who doesnt like him can have a go".

    Present day: Gerrard and seedorf

Recent past: Ronaldo (NOT cry baby), Baggio, Totti, Henry, Giggs

No longer playing: beardsley, gazza, le tissier, gullit

The above is by no means exhaustive and reflects where I was living and the league I paid attention to, and my memory.

There are plenty of other players I like/liked but were not favourites eg beckham, schmiechel, crouch, zanetti, gattuso, ledley king etc.

I always like him, not sure why, and that was why I was against Terry being captain of england as I always thought king would be in ahead of both rio and terry when he got more experience. He was as fast as rio and as strong as terry, and less error prone than either.

Didn't expect him to be so injury prone, but centre of defence is probably the worst place for it as you have to battle constantly with strikers, make sliding challenges, blocks etc. You can't really avoid trouble there.

But centre-backs run less than any other outfield player, so in general I would say they tend to lose less games to injury than other players.

S'easy when you've got Zidane and Viera to do all the work for you.

and it was his face clutching against puyol that was the problem. There might be a few dives out there but on the biggest stage only the puyol one comes to mind, so the "repeatedly diving on the biggest stage" is not exactly correct Wink

He did a very, very similar dive (clutching the face when no contact was made) in the CL against PSV only a couple of months later. Now, you might argue that a group match in the CL isn't the biggest stage, but it's still a big game in an international tournament with 10s of millions watching.

I guess while I'm at it, he was good in the box, and on the left up front. Hell he was so good he could take the ball in his own half and run half the length of the pitch and then score. That's quite a few areas of the pitch Wink.

I can think of maybe two goals in his Arsenal career where he actually took the ball half the length of the pitch. 95% he scored starting from the inside left channel. On the right, he's Cr@p. At a proper centreforward, he's Cr@p. As a deep second striker, he's Cr@p.

Not to get into another debate about the most overrated footballer of all time who could only be declared their favourite by someone with an unhealthy (possibly race related) psychological obsession with them but the thread also isn't called 'name your favourite player and no one is allowed to question anyone else's opinion'.

Henry failed in Italy, has failed in Spain, aside from scoring a lot of goals (see Owen, Michael) failed internationally. I'm not saying people aren't entitled to their view of him as a player, but I'm damned if I'm going to let even the slightest Chairwee lovefest pass without comment to the contrary.

Cantona was/is one of the most over-rated footballers on the planet Wink

Did worse than henry in other leagues and for his national team and in european competition, and was the best player in the 4th or 5th best league in europe for 2 or 3 years while playing for the richest team in that league. Mixed in with his good skills was the elbows, dirty tackles, bad sportsmanship etc. Rooney already does whatever he did and more.

    Seconded ok

Tremendous mental focus and concentration, and a great striker of the ball. Quite strong. Not much pace, not a great dribbler. Very dirty player.

His main influence (and I think you do have to give him credit for this) was as the focus/elder statesman of the United 'kids' team. His attitude to training and very competitive nature clearly rubbed off on the whole team.

My favourite player is 'De Kromme (the Crooked)' Willem van Hanegem. 1 of the key players of the Dutch 1974 squad & best player of the Feyenoord team that won the European & World Cup in 1970.

What I like most about him is that he combined great footy abilties, skill and vision with a very good mentality and toughness (tackling, etc; he was quite big and strong). Had no pace at all, but 1 of the best passers ever. Never a straight ball. Also a very good header.

Yeah, I was implying that both on and off the pitch he was the focus for that team (mentally more than in a targetman sense). I can understand why fans regard him as a great captain, but as a player he's no better than Robson. He's gained a halo because he was in a more successful team.

    Eh is that even possible?

Ignoring your stupidity, how exactly is he overated? Are people saying he was as good as Pele?

He was the standout player in the league for at least 4 years, with two different teams. He was a level above everybody else and a true inventive genius.

Because a league improves, anything a guy did before just gets discredited? what kind of logic is that.

You may believe that but it's opinion not fact.

Apart from 93/94 he never scored more than 14 goals in all competitions in a season. He never had much impact at an international level. He wasn't even the best player in the Man U team until Kanchelskis left.

Edit - just checked and he has a better international record than I remembered - but still his main achievements were falling out with managers and being banned for tournaments.

Are you serious? Surely you are having a laugh and a half here.

The emphasis on goals sometimes is to much, the guy was an all round player who ran the team, and created so many goals and chances, as well as getting a fair share on his own. And the goals he did get were usually pure quality.

You couldn't say Cantona will score, but you could say Cantona will win the game.

It's strange how Schmeichel is remembered in such a better light than Cantona. It's difficult to compare when the positions are so different, but at their best would choose Cantona in a team instead of a Schmeichel. 99 changed a lot. Who's team wouldn't Cantona get into?
