Benitez puts £15m tag on Crouch

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has hinted Peter Crouch can leave should the club receive £15m for the striker.

Benitez also confirmed that midfielder Harry Kewell and first-team coach Alex Miller would be leaving Anfield.

"Crouch wants to play every week but knows he must fight it out with Fernando Torres," Benitez said.

"We keep seeing Portsmouth linked with the player but we have had no offer as yet. A £15m price tag for Crouch would not be unreasonable."

Crouch has had limited first-team opportunities as Benitez has preferred to use Spaniard Torres - who has scored 32 goals so far this season - as a lone striker, with Steven Gerrard supporting from midfield.

Liverpool have offered the 27-year old a new contract, but earlier this month Crouch said he would decide on his future at the end of the season.

Crouch's team-mate, Kewell, will leave in the summer after the Australian reportedly rejected a new deal on reduced wages.

The 29-year-old winger's Liverpool career has been plagued by injury. He has made just 81 league appearances since his transfer from Leeds United in 2003.

"We have tried to come to an agreement with the player and his agent, but that has not been possible," said Benitez.

"Kewell will leave the club at the end of his contract."

And Benitez told BBC Radio Merseyside he believes injuries have prevented Kewell from fulfilling his potential at the club.

"In terms of the player he has quality. He has everything for being successful. The quality and the potential," he said.

John Arne Riise's future at Anfield looks uncertain after Benitez admitted he would listen to offers for the left-back, who has a year remaining on his current contract.

"He is not playing at the moment but he knows that if we receive an offer that is good for him and good for us, okay, we will talk," said the Spaniard.

"But at this moment he is our player. I am really pleased with him because he is a fantastic professional."

Benitez added that he had "some names to consider" before replacing Miller, who is leaving the club to manage JEF United Chiba in Japan.

No he's not worth £15m, Rafa is obviously trying to jack the price up.

    Thank you and goodnight.

he wont go for £15m, but if Rafa says we'll take £7m then people will start offering £5m.

Crouch is worth less than Liverpool paid for him. He's not exactly developed as a player and he's older. If he was a foreign player they'd be lucky to collect 5m.

I said the same about Hleb. The difference is that Crouch now has serious CL/international experience, and a proven international goalscoring record.

Even before Torres arrived he wasn't a regular in the first team. If you can't make Liverpool's first team on a regular basis then you're certainly not worth 15m or even 10m.

But as I said in the other thread, his performances at Liverpool don't matter that much IMO, considering the level of the teams in for him. They see someone who will be a sure starter in their team, has a reasonably good scoring rate, and has done well for England. Not saying that's the right criteria to use, but that's what will keep his price *at least* above 8 million pounds.

He is behind arguably the number one striker in europe at the minute. There is no shame in that

Because he is second behind Torres does not mean he's worth a big transfer fee.

There's a massive gap in quality between Torres and the rest of your strikers. Not sure how that means the next best has to be over £10 million.

£8 million is more than fair given his contract expiry.
