Barclays Premier League boss Richard Scudamore has welcomed today's announcement that Acorns Children's Hospice will be emblazoned on Villa shirts next season.

Scudamore, the Premier League Chief Executive, believes the pioneering partnership will be a huge success.

He said: "The power of football and the power of the Premier League has long been something that companies have tapped into to reach audiences throughout the country, and increasingly, across the globe.

"Real credit must go to Aston Villa for being the first Premier League club to use its shirt sponsorship to highlight and promote its charity partnership with Acorns, a highly public way of demonstrating that this type of commitment is central to the modern football club.

"I am sure that Acorns' association with Aston Villa will be of great help in raising awareness and funds for all the excellent work they undertake."

Nice gesture, anyway. Another sign that we have some classy owners <Ale>

Wouldn't you do a lot more for the charity by getting a proper sponsor and then donating all the money to said charity?

When clubs do this kind of the stuff they want to be appreciated and what better way to do it by reminding people of it constantly by having it on their shirt.

I don't know. I think the idea is that the advertising/press etc. this generates and the awareness it creates will be worth more than a one-off payment like that.

Sure, there's a bit of an 'aren't we great?' element to it, partly done for PR - but, hell, it beats helping promote online gambling, as we do at the minute!

I thought it was 'Villa Copy Bars a Loner' - David Villa lookalike pub-owner John Davis today barred Hank Wank from his pub, the Coach and Horses in Upper Downton. He said that Wank's morose nature generated an unfriendly atmosphere that drove other punters away.

Say you got a proper sponsor who paid you something like 5 million/year (don't know what the figures actually are) and you gave that to the charity. Surely 5 million/year to the charity is worth more than advertising?

I can see in your case that the charity is not known so it might be worth it, but it seems very strange in the case of barcelona. Has anyone who has money to give to charity not heard of Unicef?
